For sixteen years, Candy has been a passionate educator. Her tireless commitment and infectious personality spreads like wildfire, igniting a desire to learn from every student she encounters. A history teacher and born storyteller, Candy uses her unique experiences and abilities to reach students who are deemed "unreachable". Candy served as a programming counselor at Georgetown University for four years before teaching history in Tipton County Schools (2007-18) and Millington Municipal Schools (2018-21). She joined Memphis Shelby County Schools as a counselor in 2021 and currently serves as the Senior Counselor for Memphis University School leading and implementing plans to best support boy's social and emotional well being. In stating her counseling philosophy, Candy says, “all students have dignity and worth and have a right to a welcoming, safe, and mutually respectful learning environment.” With experience counseling students in grades 6-12 through periods of grief, transition, changing family dynamics, and other challenges, she says she is “motivated by the belief that all children can be successful learners when they are healthy emotionally, mentally, and physically.” Candy and her husband, Marcus Harris, Sr., celebrated 15 years of marriage this year, and they have three children: Marcus II, 12; Cadence, 11; and Myles, 10.While addressing her own challenges as a parent, Candy wrote a book compelled by her perceived and self-imposed failures as a mom. She realized that teaching and raising children had many correlations. She acknowledged that motherhood was not all the glitz and glamour that maternity magazines and marketing often portray. Candy chose to share her authentic voice as a mom who never fantasized about motherhood hoping to encourage other moms who might be overwhelmed. In turn, her audience demanded more and asked her to host a book club that transformed into a support group offering a safe space to be heard. Candy established MOMversations901 and meets monthly with Memphis moms while supporting small business in the community. She is motivated to continue supporting mothers and women hoping to provide healthy parenting skills, an increased sense of empowerment, and a feeling of belonging.
