Candy Smith started her career as a Community Investment Administrator at ABSA/Barclays where she facilitated and coordinated the Employee Volunteering Programme (EVP) portfolio. She later joined IREX as the Southern Africa Regional Program Coordinator and later Senior Program Coordinator for the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Mandela Washington Fellowship a program initiated in 2015 by the former US President Barack Obama. Among other responsibilities, at IREX, Candy managed the relationship between Mandela Washington Fellows and partners through grant funding, mentorships, high level internships, conferences and other opportunities. During this time, she honed her skills in project management, events and conference planning, team coordination and management, communications, data analysis and reporting and managing budgets. One of her greatest strengths is her ability to adapt to different environments and pay attention to detail, even while working under pressure. Candy holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Witwatersrand and an honors degree in applied psychology with the University of South Africa. She is currently a Communications Consultant with the YALI Regional Leadership Center Southern Africa the sister program to the YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship.
