Dr. Cantey received his Ph.D. in Optical Science and Engineering and his M.S. in Physics from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His B.S. in Physics was earned at Wofford College. Dr. Cantey is the current Director of Research for K Sciences GP, LLC and has over 26 years of experience as a physicist, optical engineer, systems engineer, and project manager. He has developed test instrumentation from concept to commercial through the years. At K Sciences, he has been invaluable at solving technical challenges for internal R&D and external customers, providing technical direction and leadership, and creating an innovative and dynamic research environment. Notable commercial projects completed include noninvasive blood glucose monitor for Socrates Health Solutions, rapid pathogen identification epi-fluorescent microscope for GeneCapture Inc., real-time video overlay interface for Chaparral Fire Unit control for Project XYZ, and Smart Connector Chaparral Diagnostic System for Project XYZ Inc.Working at Optical Sciences Corporation for 16 years, he was the primary senior scientist for numerous programs with the U.S. Army Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation as chief technical advisor and subject matter expert for the Mobile Multi-Sensor TSPI (time space and position information) System (MMTS) program to optically track hypervelocity projectiles; optical systems development and operations for Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) simulations for the U.S. Army Systems Simulation and Development Directorate (SS&DD) of the Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center (AMRDEC); developed HWIL simulations for testing semi-active laser (SAL) seekers in the Viper Strike program and Joint Common Missile (JCM); research effort to develop a laser diode infrared scene projector for high radiance testing of the THAAD interceptor seeker in HWIL simulations; and operation and testing various seekers including Viper Strike, THAAD, BAT P3I, and JCM. Dr. Cantey has functioned as principal investigator for numerous SBIR and STTR projects for NASA working with Oak Ridge National Laboratories investigating lightweight astronomical mirror substrates; U.S. Air Force developing 1) wide FOV sensor testing system 2) supercontinuum laser systems 3) high contrast IR projector 4) off-axis optical rejection testing; DARPA developing cryodeposit mitigation; Missile Defense Agency developing high temperature IR scene projections; and U. S. Army developing test hardware for the Test, Measurement, and Diagnostic Equipment Directorate.
