I have always had a passion for science and discovery which is why I am pursuing a role as a research scientist. Specifically, I have great interest in the immunology space as well as neurodegenerative disease research. Consequently, I have been learning techniques common to these areas and hope to learn more through industry internships. As a member of the Society for Industrial Biotechnology at Penn State University Park, I have gotten the opportunity to shadow in the CSL Behring Fermentation Facility and achieve 6 certifications in fermentation processing. Outside of science, I have learned the joy of helping others through different philanthropic avenues. Growing up I was an active member in my Boy Scout troop, leading and participating in many projects aimed at benefitting our community, which resulted in me achieving the highest rank, Eagle Scout. The past few years I have been involved in the largest student-run philanthropy organization in the world, THON, which raised over $15 million for childhood cancer research this year alone. My involvement in collaborative organizations has taught me how to work well with other people from a diverse set of backgrounds. This semester I have gotten the opportunity to work with a team of four other students each with different academic backgrounds to create and present a biotechnology solution for a UN sustainability goal. The strengths in different backgrounds demonstrated by each team member have resulted in the pursuance of both utility and design patents for our product. We plan to continue to work together in the hopes of making our vision come to fruition.
