I was an ILM-accredited associate tutor and project lead with the Social Enterprise Academy (SEA) Africa. SEA was founded in Scotland in 2004 and now operates through a social franchise model in more than a dozen countries.SEA delivers learning and team development programmes focused on leadership, enterprise, personal development and social impact. Highly active in the social enterprise space and aiming primarily at people and organisations enabling social change, SEA works at both local and national levels. Their programmes are designed around the Practitioner-Led Learning Exchange (PLLX) model that enables adult learners to share and learn together in an optimal manner.Clients I led assignments on with SEA include: UN, FIFA, Oslo University, UCT Graduate School of Business and George Soros’ Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa.I worked in various African countries besides South Africa, including supporting the associate tutor development process in SEA Rwanda. Habitat for Humanity is an international NGO with a presence in 70 countries, including South Africa since 1996. I was appointed by the board of directors to refocus, streamline and reinvigorate an organisation that had lost its way in a rapidly changing environment.Over the next six years I worked with the staff, management team, board and regional office to lead the organisation from being an insular home-construction charity to set it firmly on a path to becoming a leading rights-based actor in South Africa’s urbanisation landscape. Clearstream (which started life being called Dean & Dickinson, and was sold in 2012) was a leading South African email and web marketing company whose clients include Truworths, Singita and Cape Union Mart. We drew on 16 years of digital marketing experience to deliver a goal-oriented and strategically-led approach, with a focus helping clients use the internet as a profitable business tool.

A company that I started with my brother in the UK was acquired by Steel Design (as it was then known) in 2002 as a key part of their strategy to diversify from a traditional print design studio into a new media agency (STEEL London). Appointed to the board initially as Director of Operations, I was responsible for overseeing the merger of the two companies, integrating all the disparate operational processes and procedures, driving growth in the then-new avenue of web development, and implementing a succession plan for the retiring Founder-Managing Director.I introduced formal strategic planning, annual goal-setting and a raft of procedures and systems, with the result that during my tenure the business more than doubled in size and profits increased three-fold. The succession plan involved me orchestrating a management buyout of the founder’s shares by the other Directors.

Starting out as a premium IT and networking provider to SMEs, Bluegrass grew to provide a complete range of web solutions for businesses, including content managed websites, ecommerce, application development, managed hosting services and email marketing.Bluegrass Technologies has evolved into Bluegrass Digital, which is still going strong over thirty years later under the leadership of one of the founding family partners.
