Marketing's role is simple: "Create tools for sales to sell products" or even better - to allow the products to sell themselves. As VP of Marketing, I do this with four roles that I play:a) Chief Translator (CT)b) Exceptions Minimizer (EM)c) Centralizing Decentralizer (CD)d) Collaboration Junky (CJ)Chief Translator (CT)Technical issues that may excite scientists will bore the layman. Product features and benefits are only so, insofar as they are benefits and features to the user. As CT, I make complicated products simple. My translation skills allow scientists to maintain their enthusiasm for their products, while getting customers excited at the same time. This is done by distilling the information to its essence and then organizing in a way that have customers saying, "This is exactly what I was looking for!"Exceptions Minimizer (EM)Hate is a strong word, but it's truly how I feel about exceptions. I see every narrow task, project or process as part of a broader one. As EM, my role is to understand why there is an exception and to devise a system whose rules eliminate that exception. By looking at the pieces and steps of the process, these can often be simplified or streamlined to make the exception part of the broader solution.Centralizing Decentralizer (CD):Marketing gathers information and centralizes it. This central repository then needs to be disseminated. As CD, my role is gather and organize information and then provide the locations of this information to customers and market partners, so they always know where to get the latest information, and to know that it is always the most up to date.Collaboration Junky (CJ):Today's tools need to be collaborative in nature. As CJ, I design or use existing tools and systems so that everyone can work on the same documents at the same time. Access rights, permissions, shared folders, revision histories and company portals are all a part of this.I love my job :)
