Senior Software Engineer

Threatkey

ThreatKey is like anti-virus for your cloud. It scans your cloud infrastructure for potential signs of misconfiguration or even active threats.I began working with TK while working at Miscreants. I rebuilt their entire SaaS application website, the so-called V2, in MUI. From there, I maintained the frontend, later joining TK as a full-time employee. I pushed the site design forward as well as pioneered several UI/X overhauls to improve functionality and user experience. When create-react-app died, I removed it from our project, handrolling a Webpack config to minimize disruptions. I overhauled the site's aesthetics which had prior to been stock-MUI-plus-colors. Over the years, I reduced the payload size of the application, getting it down to under a megabyte. This allowed me to take the unusual step of removing code-splitting to improve U/X as the site loaded in under two seconds on even old 4G mobile internet speed. My latest streamlining further reduced the payload size over 45% (to just over 500kb!) while maintaining functionality and simplifying the process of expanding the site's application support. I even contributed to the python backend a handful of commits.

Novelist

I write murder mysteries. Lately science fiction novels. Published some of them.

Senior Javascript Engineer

Miscreants is a marketing/design firm and did the U/I development for EndSpam. Sean (CEO) wanted to dip his toes into software development. I joined that new wing of Miscreants providing software development for a new raft of Miscreants clients, which included ThreatKey. I built a highly-interactive Figma site before Figma had any tools for interactivity other than embedding script files.

Dec 2021 - Mar 2023

Lead Frontend Developer

EndSpam empowered regular US citizens to counter phone spam with actionable legal suits. You forwarded your calls to an ES number which would re-forward it back to your phone while recording the call. ES also issues you a legit-but-fake credit card number to give to spammer who “convinced” you to pay for some illegal fee. The “fake” credit card number was issued by Stripe and special deals made directly with Visa et al. gave unique insight to the other end of the transactions which can be used in a lawsuit.I consulted with them on the MVP front end UI design and then implemented it using React. I focused on making the UI light and modular so they could grow and adapt quickly as the startup takes off. I also contributed code to the back end, which is golang.

May 2021 - Dec 2021

Lead Software Engineer

Futurestar Cards

New York, United States

Custom sports collectibles for your school-age children, mainly baseball cards. Upload your photos, choose a theme, an in-house AI would align the photos for you, and we'd send you a pack of your kid's own cards. I coded everything: the site, the theme editor, the backend, the AWS architecture and deployment pipeline. I also coded the initial AI before funding issues put the startup into hibernation. And then 2020 happened.

Jun 2018 - Jun 2019

Senior Javascript Developer

Greater New York City Area

I hired as a React frontend developer. But I moved to the backend on day one and stayed there. I worked on the various APIs and building out the structures needed for the Evaluations program which aimed to digitize a decades-old promotion and evaluation system for management.I split the monolithic application structure into microservices. I also built and maintained the real-time sync daemon between Box.com and the application. Further, I put together the original export/import options to/from the original spreadsheets used for the manual process. I pioneering code-complexity overhaul, reducing coderelated bugs dramatically. And rewriting the shell script-based deploy process reducing downtime from 20+ minutes to zero.

Jan 2017 - Feb 2018

Ui/X Developer

I was the lead developer on EL's upcoming "Fractions" product: a webbased educational gaming system meant to teach and evaluate grade school children's understanding of fractions in a curriculumcompliant environment.I developed several prototype games using Phaser.js. Then I wrote the API server that tracked student's gameplay with Node and Restify, plus managing the database that stored the information. This includedan inter-iframe communication construct to report activity from AWShosted games without requiring the games themselves to contact the API server. To aid testing the student's learned knowledge, I designed the WYSIWYG test builder allowing educators to build content- and userspecific tests pertaining to what the children had learned in our games. The second version was powered by React, Redux, and ES6 JavaScript. To let test writers more easily compute student's answers and openended results, I wrote a fully-featured sandboxed implementation of JavaScript's eval to allow custom logic to be deployed for those tests without the downsides of vanilla eval. This lent to logic code that teachers could be taught and developers could debug. As well as understand if it were ever the case that I no longer worked at thecompany.

Mar 2015 - Mar 2016

Ui/X Developer

Indianapolis, Indiana Area

I made webpages do things they weren't designed to do. I was assigned on the Contact Builder project. Collaborated with my co-workers to bring the codebase to a more uniform standard. And built and maintained the "Constellation View", an interactive control that demonstrated how the various channels of data connected to a particular client flowed within the ET system. This control was highlighted by Scott McCorkle at Connections 2013.

May 2013 - Jun 2014

Ceo, Lead Developer

“Your social network personal assistant.” A mobile app that merged Facebook and Twitter streams with pre-AI “contextual importance”. It visually enhanced content the system thought you would like without removing content you didn't. The difference between hard-muting “basketball” and see seeing that “i hate basketball” joke you would otherwise like.Funding in 2009 by Bootup Labs out of Vancouver. My co-founder and I moved to Vancouver to further develop the app. Two things killed Status.ly. Bootup Labs' primary investor pulled out following the 2010 Haitian earthquake. And Twitter/Facebook changing their EULAs to block merging their content with “other sources”.

2008 - 2010 ~2 yrs

Full Stack Engineer

Electra Digital Design Studio

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States

My first professional job began as an unpaid intern position during college. Within a month it became full time employment. My main tasks was back end coding in PHP and some light PERL. I helped develop one of the few online pharmacies that existed in the US before they were banned. We also did general web development for the Oklahoma City area. Including a custom-built CMS for the various facilities on the Ft. Sill Air Force base in Oklahoma.
