Captain Comics was the No. 3 in the newsroom, behind the EIC and the Managing Editor. He was in charge of (and sometimes the only worker in) the features dept., the entertainment magazine, the editorial pages (daily and advance), the graphics department, special projects and the copydesk. I wrote, edited, managed, drew, inked, planned and held up the weekends. He was initially given a promotion to management because he was costing the company too much money in overtime. Plus, he won, like, a bajillion design and writing awards.

He was the managing editor of what was then Express Publishing, which owned and operated three Tennessee weeklies, the Bartlett Express, the Millington Bluejacket and the Raleigh Advertiser. He was in charge of the proofreading, advertising and production of all three; he was also the EIC of the Express. In the latter role he managed and edited the entire paper, taking it from a six-page paper to a 16-page paper, and supervising editorial, advertising and production staff. And he learned a heckuva lot.
