RAN Maritime Trade Operations (MTO) is a contemporary capability and a key warfighting enabler and force multiplier that supports the maritime military operations and exercises to achieve the crucial task of maritime trade protection. Operating under COMFLOT, the RAN Maritime Trade Operations Team 1 (MTOT1) is the Navy’s primary Civil-Military (CIVMIL) specialist capability within the CDF Preparedness Directive to support the requirements across a range of contingency operations and activities. By leveraging its diverse team of MTO Officers, the MTOT1 unit facilitates the protection of maritime trade and ensures better mutual understanding for maintaining sovereignty over the national and international maritime interests of Australia while providing an organic link to maritime industry and merchant shipping. The MTOT1 provides niche CIVMIL skills which do not reside elsewhere within the Navy. The MTOT1 presents unique MTO effects as a scalable capability whose primary purpose is to coordinate naval operations with maritime industry and merchant shipping, in order to support the military operations.
