About Cara Thompson

I'm a writer, campaigner, and creative whose work frequently explores issues of race, culture, mental health and wellbeing, and the power of creativity. My work includes written, published, and performance poetry, articles and thought pieces, events management, social activism, and multiple voluntary and public speaking roles. My writing has been published on the HuffPost 'Black Voices' column, in a collection by the Poetry Foundation, and commissioned by the NHS, RIBA, The University of Manchester, and Simon and Schuster. My public speaking has also taken place on a range of platforms, from working with local charity groups, radio stations and and social enterprises in my hometown of Nottingham, to serving as a guest speaker at the NHS Citizens Assembly in both London and Manchester. I also placed third nationally in the 2016 Lancaster Writing Awards 'Poetry' category. Most recently, I have joined the Nottingham poetry collective 'GOBS', written and produced my first poetry film 'Chronic', and continue to write and perform at events in my city. In 2021, I represented the Nottingham City of Literature at UNESCO’s international poetry slam Slamovision and won with my poem ‘Island Screams’.Overall, my aim is to encourage open, thought-provoking discussion of important social issues and ideas, and to do this with thoughtfulness and creativity.I am also highly interested in opportunities to travel, and spent the second semester of my second year of University at Canada's #1 ranking academic institution, McGill University in Montreal.
