“SS 73 BIS OF BOCCA TRABARIA – CONSTRUCTION WORK ON THE ACCESS ROAD OF URBIN FROM THE BRANCH LINE OF BORZAGA TO THE CITY OF LE CONCE 1st FRAGMENT” - Total cost of the works : 22.3 million euro Along the section of 1,970 metres in total, 3 curved viaducts have been created, covering a total of 1,270 metres. The viaducts have a framework made from a mixture of concrete and steel with an on-going structure consisting of two double T beams and one slab made from reinforced concrete of a variable linear thickness. The two beams, of a varying height of a minimum of 2 m, in the jamb walls, to a maximum of 4 m in all of the sections on the bridge pier, positioned at intervals of 6 metres, are constant along the entire length of the viaduct and are entirely welded without any bolted segments, with advantages in terms of duration and aesthetics. The total width of the section of the framework is 13 m and includes the carriageway of 10.5 m and two footways of 1.25 m each; the slab has a section with a variable thickness of 35 cm on the level of the supports on the metal beams, to 25 cm on the axial line and 20 cm at the end of the side overhangs and it is connected with the beams by means of electro-welded connectors (“Nelson” type pegs). The bridge piers are made from reinforced concrete with a rectangular section of 3.50x2.00 with a variable height of 3 to 20 metres and surmounted by a backrest of 5 metres high that expands into a fan gate until reaching a width of 8.30 m at the peak, being able to hold the two beams of the framework. The foundations consist of wells of a diameter of 6 to 8 m and can reach a depth of 17 metres: in some cases, it is necessary to create a supporting side dam created from jet grouting columns of a diameter of 60 cm for stabilisation of the excavations.

MOTORWAY ROME – FIUMICINO AIRPORT: CONSTRUCTION WORK OF THE THIRD LANE – Total cost of the works 22.8 million euroThe project included expansion of the hard shoulder, the creation of a third lane and modification of the central dividing strip, also increasing the dimension of the section of the road to 33.00 lm. Up to a considerable depth, the stratigraphic stage has an important aptitude to vertical deformation on a medium and long term, due to the presence of clay beds and frequent levels of peat and this not only means important settlements of primary stabilisation but also important long term secondary stabilisation. The study of the project with regards to expansion of an existing embankment (existing for many years and having reached a certain level of stability after several considerable embankments) was rather delicate in terms of compatibility of the subsidence of the new section with that of the old structure. In this regard it would have been practically impossible, with a traditional embankment, to eliminate the abovementioned problems, so much so that the presence and thickness of the new peat is irregular and this creates problems in terms of differential subsidence. Therefore a technical solution was adopted in order to avoid the problem rather than resolve it. This solution included the use of lighter materials, expanded clay, for the creation of the embankment and foundations of the road, by removing enough thickness of the natural supporting ground (with a higher volume weight) and replacing it with light layers, so as to create a balance on the surface of the new structure between the pre-existing pressures and the new loads applied. The distribution of final vertical tension was similar to the pre-existing distribution, the vertical deformations should have been limited (and therefore immediately compatible with those of the remaining part of the embankment) and the consecutive shearing forces almost negligible.
