I served on the Standard Life Investments Ethical Committee, which met quarterly in Edinburgh. We worked together to ensure that the strict criteria set for investments in SLI's ethical funds were in keeping with investors' wishes and expectations. We conducted regular surveys of our investors to find out their ethical priorities and then figured out how to realistically implement them. I applied to be on the committee because I'm a passionate believer in the importance of ethics in all things, including where we put our money, so my small pension pot is invested in these funds. I gained valuable experience while sitting on the SLI Ethical Committee: working with a diverse group of people on a formal committee, reviewing complex information including financials, navigating complex ethical decisions professionally and pragmatically, and crucially how to get a £29 "bargain berth" on the sleeper train from London by booking months in advance.

A three-month freelance contract in New York to oversee the launch of a video games spin-off from the US men’s mag I had launched five years earlier. This senior role involved all the politics, budgets, team-building, celebrity-wrangling, ideas, late nights and takeout you’d expect when launching a 140-page magazine on budget and to a tight deadline.

This three-month freelance contract in New York to manage Stuff Magazine’s high-profile US launch involved deputising for the Editor, recruiting and managing staff, developing the magazine’s style, planning and organising the office, commissioning and editing features, and editing a 35-page section of men’s fashion and new consumer products. Stuff, sister title to market leader Maxim, rapidly became the second best selling men’s mag in the US with monthly sales of over a million.

I edited this monthly UK men’s magazine’s 20-page front section, packed with new product stories, celebrity interviews and investigative pieces.I conceived, commissioned, wrote and edited stories. I interviewed everyone from film stars to astronauts, and wrote on subjects as diverse as hi-tech rosaries and Japanese trainer collectors.I also recruited and managed staff writers, managed a budget, and represented the magazine at industry events and in the media, including live TV and radio interviews.

I was responsible for the production, style and accuracy of the mag, managing budgets, commissioning and writing.
