Sponsored by Severn Trent and EPSRC through the STREAM industrial doctorate centre for the water sector, my PhD has investigated the microbial community of drinking water treatment plants with a particular focus on coliform bacteria. My project has generated novel data on chlorine tolerance in coliforms and E.coli as well as greater knowledge of the microbial community in biofilms and bulk water at working UK water treatment plants.

As a quality analyst in Severn Trent's microbiology laboratory, I analysed water samples to determine their microbial water quality and safety. I used culture-based techniques to check for the presence of indicator organisms (e.g. E.coli and coliforms) among other tests. Other laboratory duties included preparation of media, reporting of results to other teams, participation in an 'on-call' rota to respond to any incidents that needed immediate analysis and training new staff in lab methods.
