Robert Laird is an Engineer and Carbon Consultant. He has a passion foralternative energies and demonstrates an extensive knowledge in pyrolysistechnologies. For over 10 years, Robert has designed and built biochar retorts and gasifier stoves. He has worked with many small to large-scale businesses globally to develop workable solutions to convert waste to products.With his trade background as a Diesel Fitter, Robert saw firsthand, the damagebeing done to farmland, and the greater environment, while flying in to open cutmines and gas gathering sites. This prompted him to undertake further studies in Carbon Accounting, where he developed a deeper understanding of the carbon cycle, and the many serious problems we all face with climate change. It was during this study, that he learned about biochar, and how it can help on so many levels. He then tested the theory by making his first retort, making his first batch of biochar, and doing his first crop trial. On seeing the positive results, Robert dedicated his life's work to developing efficient systems for producing biochar and utilising syngas.His recent activities include designing, building and operating retorts, wood vinegar collection units, biomass drying systems and associated equipment at all scales. He has travelled around Australia and abroad, building, installing and commissioning both fixed plant and mobile units, while talking with farmers about the benefits of such technologies, and what the end products can do for them. Robert is a frequent speaker at environmental seminars and enjoys promoting the benefits of carbon sequestration, wood vinegar, biochar and the results in soil quality and crop yield they bring. In 2011 he started his business, Carbon Offset Zone, which is committed to fighting climate change, by selling plans for pyrolysis units and facilitating individuals and businesses to offset their carbon footprints.
