Pre-sales and support for Klocwork customers on the West Coast of the U.S. Promote static analysis tool use as complementary to testing and other quality processes. Implement Proof-of-Concept installations on customer source bases to directly illustrate the value Klocwork tools can provide for that customer.

WDB is HP’s version of the open-source gdb debugger, tuned to HP-UX and the HP-UX compilers. Led cross-functional team implementing Debugging of Optimized Code for the Itanium Processor Family. Eliminated debugger quality as an issue requiring management attention. Fixed the regression test suite to produce reproducible results from run to run, and added 50% more test points over three years.

This team was an experiment by JCTL lab management, organized to work on the issues of workstation customers across the entire HP-UX development toolchain instead of one component of that toolchain. Focused R&D efforts on customer issues such as out-of-the-box performance, transparent usability, and application (as opposed to benchmark) performance. Promoted use of stochastic testing, filing over 100 defect reports against the Itanium optimizers in 2002 alone. Implemented fault-tolerant optimization again in the Itanium compiler.

The PA-RISC low-level optimizer was the first assembly-level optimizer in the industry. By 1996 it provided SPEC runtime performance only challenged by DEC Alpha at over twice the clock speed. Consulted for ISVs and spoke widely as an Optimization and Performance Evangelist. Led an effort that eliminated compilation time as an issue in that compiler ever since. Trained offshore team to successfully assume maintenance responsibility for the back end.Implemented many new optimizations including Profile-Based Optimization, support for static branch prediction, 64-bit code generation, cheap redundancy elimination, infrastructure for cross-module optimization, and inlined library calls. Doubled the delivered quality of the optimizer at a stroke by introducing fault-tolerant optimization.
