    Straight after being made redundant I was lucky enough to read a job advert in the local paper from a relatively new small building company wanting a driver / maintenance operative. I was successful with my application and interview and commenced my new employment mainly driving, delivering materials, keeping the jobs clean and tidy, hand digging foundations for new extension. As the company grew, so did my own experience moving on to larger jobs and mechanized form of working.

    Before leaving School I was fortunate enough to be offered an apprentice Joiners position for a local building / maintenance company. Most of the work was either day to day maintenance or complete shop fit outs country wide for the likes of, Argos, Virgin Records, Burtons, Halfords etc. Most of this time was spent working away from from home which I really enjoyed at the time. Unfortunately the recession of the early 80s took its toll on the company and it was regrettably forced into receivership which resulted in redundancy. A devastating blow at such a young age which was greeted at home with "I still expect your board money on the table next week"

    Growing up in the 70s could be challenging with my father in and out of work and relying on social support and free school dinners. Times could be embarrassing for a proud working class family however when the opportunity presented itself for a 13 years old to help out on a farm and get paid for doing so how could you refuse, so on a Friday afternoon, straight from school, jump on my bike, cycle the 15 miles to the farm, stay over in the farm worker caravan, work two full days and cycle home on the Sunday with £10 in my pocket, it was liberating and a fantastic introduction into work life at a young age.
