Hi there! I'm Carl. I am a passionate dance aficionado with a broad skill-set in making stuff happen for performance makers, particularly in Sydney, but further afield as well. At the core of my professional practice is the intersection of creative practice (making and doing dancing, collaborating with others on multi-disciplinary performance works), sharp project and business management (big picture and the finer details) and strategic partnership development (connecting the right ideas with the right people and organisations). I am a chameleon-like problem solver, adept at manoeuvering things, wearing multiple hats simultaneously and being able to communicate with empathy to all the 'stakeholders' (I prefer 'people') I connect with, because I know what it's like first hand to make work, perform in work, teach people, plan, budget and fundraise, project manage, stage manage, program manage, coordinate and evaluate while still making time to masticate.I have worked with a lot of artists and organisations over the years in a range of roles. In 2017, I was a participant in the Australia Council’s Future Leaders Program and in 2016 I was awarded the City of Parramatta’s Creative Fellowship. I co-founded two successful (still operating) creative businesses: Flatline, a visual art and dance collaboration that creates performance, installation and art works that have been presented internationally, most recently in Malta as part of the Malta International Arts Festival, and also in festivals and biennials across Australia and Asia; and Dance Makers Collective, the only dance company in Australia with a collective artistic leadership team, and Western Sydney's only professional dance company.I am a passionate advocate for the role that the arts plays in the lives of all Australians, I sit on several boards and committees whilst at the same time teach children and old folks dance for fun - the arts have a vital function not just for the elite, and not just as a bit of fun in the afternoons, but for all the people in between. The arts are transformational, my primary objective is to inject wherever I can with them, and help others do the same, so more and more people can be transformed (for good of course).

General Manager / Co-DirectorDance Makers Collective 2012 - PresentSydney, New South Wales, AustraliaDance Makers Collective (DMC) deliver rich dance experiences for a broad cross-section of the public. We make, teach and perform work with/by/for a range of people because we believe in the intrinsic human necessity to move, and the unique capacity of dance to benefit all people physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially. Our mission is to build dance communities and we do this for the people of Western Sydney. All the work we do engages deeply with those for whom it is meant. People are transformed by dance, and it is our job to facilitate these transformational experiences.DMC is a group of Sydney based dancers and choreographers. Conceived with the vision of providing a platform for dance artists to make work with shared resources, DMC has also become an important platform for exchange and the incubation of ideas. With a fluid, collective structure we aim to support the development of new dance work, by our members, from research stages right through to production, building vibrant and highly collaborative working relationships.Since it's inception in 2012, DMC has presented four full-length performance works: Big Dance in Small Chunks (2013); A Triple Bill: Sketch, Between Two and Zero and Safe Hands (2014); DADS (2016); The Rivoli (2020), produced an online dance film series WEBISODES; and formed Future Makers, Sydney's newest Youth Dance Company. LecturerAustralian College Of Physical Education 2018 - PresentHomebush, New South Wales, AustraliaSince 2018, I have been delivering a course at the Australian College of Physical Education called Dance Promotion, which I designed to enable currently enrolled Bachelor students to up-skill in areas including entrepreneurial management, project management and marketing for small dance businesses. This course guides students through an applied learning framework where students pitch an idea for a dance business and position the business in the marketplace, identifying how the business addresses an identified need or fills a gap in the market, followed by a minimum viable product or prototype offering to test the viability and strength of the business idea, followed by a marketing strategy and a business plan. In my position I lead lectures and tutorials, grade assessments, evaluate the course regularly and adapt it to new research and best practice. -
Co DirectorFlatline 2011 - PresentSydney, New South Wales, AustraliaFlatline is a cross art-form collective founded by Visual Artist Todd Fuller and Dancer/Choreographer Carl Sciberras. Flatline aims to create a hybrid interaction between the mediums of Art and Dance. From this conversation the pair have developed a new language while finding a niche between the art and dance world.Driven by a wish to break the confines of their respective practices, Flatline seeks out a place that is innovative, challenging and inspiring between of the parameters of art and dance. Flatline responds to site, to light, to movement and the quintessential base elements of point and space. Dancers draw across the stage, which is transformed into a temporal sketchbook tracking their motion while drawers step forward into the limelight to expose the performative aspects of their craft. Flatline utilises technology as a vessel for the interaction that drives this immersive experience. The drawer becomes a live performer, like a conductor yielding an orchestra, while the dancer brings life to the once motionless marks of a maker.Flatline has presented performance and video works for theatres, festivals, galleries, biennales and conferences across Australia and Asia since launching in 2011.
