Dr Carla Eisemberg is the Science Outreach Manager at Charles Darwin University, Australia. Carla is also a researcher at RIEL (Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods). Carla leads research, science outreach and conservation projects in partnership with a diverse group of stakeholders such as industry partners, governments and traditional communities in Northern Australia, Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and Tropical Asia. In many cases, she uses turtles as models to study the relationships between ecology and harvest and as umbrella species to initiate conservation and food security efforts. However, her projects are not limited to any particular group. She is interested in the broader themes of applied ecology, wildlife conservation, environmental education, sustainable development, remote communities’ health and science communication.

Papua New Guinea

- 2008-2012: I was the project creator and led all on-ground activities. During this initial phase, we created school material and activities focusing on the conservation and managed of the pig-nosed turtle. - 2012-2017: I became the project advisor, with PNG nationals in charge of the activities on-ground, following our long-term plan to create local capacity building. My role was to create educational materials on environmental issues and facilitate annual reports. - 2018-2019: The local NGO Piku Biodiversity Network was created, and I became the Project Coordinator for its Piku Project branch. My role is to oversight on-ground activities, create educational materials and write annual reports.

Assessment of northern long-necked turtle population status and school awareness along the Finniss River, Northern TerritoryI was the Project Coordinator for the northern long-necked turtle project on the Finniss Reynolds River Catchment. I work in partnership with traditional owners, schools and community to monitor, identify threats and build awareness about the drivers of the current long-necked turtle mortality observed in northern Australia.

Projetu Lenuk Lorosa`e – community awareness and population assessment of the critically endangered Timor-Leste long-necked turtle I was the Project coordinator responsible for on ground activities, as well as the creation and distribution of educational material, while liaising with the Timor-Leste government, schools and communities.

- 2010-2011: My interest in exploring the links between Australia and Brazil started when I assisted on the conceptualization of the exhibition “Tracing Geological Time”, organized by the Brazilian Embassy in Canberra. - 2015-2016: I was a Post-doctoral fellow through the Brazilian Science without Borders Program. My research was on defining priority areas for Amazon turtle conservation in the face of climate change. During this post-doc I created a network of researchers and practitioners, which lead to the next phase of this project.- 2016-2019: I was the Project coordinator for an exchange program that created educational and research opportunities between Charles Darwin University and Brazilian Amazon Institutions through the Brazilian Amazon Field Intensive.

As the IUCN red list coordinator for freshwater turtles and tortoises of the world, I liaised with over 100 turtle specialists around the word to update all species status. I also organize and facilitate workshops, such as the south east Asia freshwater turtles’ workshop in Singapore (2018), when 38 specialists from eight countries met to define the turtle species status for the region.
