Profile bio

About Carla Mello

Growing up I thought my future was in science and biology. I love to learn about life, its elements, diversity, and processes. My education gave me a completely new and complex understanding of our world, its inhabitants, and the environment around us.I thought I struck gold when I land a position working in a molecular biology lab, and I learned so much from it: the discipline, the precision, scientific process, and the importance of data. However, there was also a routine that did not fit my personality. My day-to-day was very repetitive. Same experiments and procedures day after day. As someone who really appreciates new challenges and experiences, I craved for more. I spent part of my time volunteering for NGOs that focused on environmental issues, and it became clear that in our efforts to bring awareness to these issues we were only making waves when we were working with youth and education. I also realized I absolutely loved teaching. As part of my B.A in Education, I interned in a museum and developed activities for students. It was a revelation. I finally found my place: museums and education. I can combine all the great skills I developed as a researcher (the thirst for knowledge, the methodological thinking, the experimentation, the creativity, and problem-solving skills) with communication and interpersonal connections.Since then, I had the opportunity to work in two museums and one science center. I absolutely love the fast-paced, hyper-creative, always evolving world of museum education. I successfully participated in the implementation of a brand-new education department in the Gustavo Le Paige Museum, increasing student's visitation and teacher engagement. At COSI I wore many hats, facilitating demonstrations and activities for visitors of all ages. When I was given the opportunity to lead a career-exploration program, I developed a unique program, leveraging existing partners and establishing new partnerships with professionals and companies in order to provide a real-world, relevant experience for my students. As the Department Manager of School & Teacher Support at Ohio History Connection, I can take all my experience with outreach, community engagement, education, science and program management to bridge the gap between the informal and formal education environments, and enrich the learning experiences of educators and students. It's such an exciting challenge!

Listed skills include Docencia, Museos, Oratoria, Redes Sociales, and 2 others.
