Dr. Carla Cerami is an Associate Professor at MRCG Unit the Gambia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine who specialises in Global Health and Pharmaceutical Clinical Development. She leads the Iron, Infection and Anemia group within the Nutrition and Planetary Health theme. She has been based in The Gambia since 2016. She is an MD with a PhD in malaria and immunology.She is an American physician scientist with over 20 years of experience specialising in clinical and preclinical research in infectious diseases, malaria, immunology, neurology, genomics, anaemia, sickle cell anaemia and nutrition. Proven leader demonstrating competencies in developing medical strategies for investigator-led studies, managing pre-clinical and clinical research programs, gathering evidence and analysing and publishing data to shape insights on next generation therapeutics. Adept at complying with regulatory standards, developing study protocols, liaising with biostatisticians, interpreting both safety and efficacy data, publishing high-impact research, budgeting and project management. Also with entrepreneurial experience, creation of valuable intellectual property, working closely with legal team to file for patents and founding a company to support the development and commercialization process.
