As Senior Consultant, Carl’s time is divided between overseeing the delivery of all Agile software products, whilst authoring, continuously improving and delivering transformational classroom Agile training courses and on-the-job workshops to customers: C-suite, middle management, Product Owners, Scrum Masters and co-located/distributed Development Teams. Recognising the importance of trainee engagement for enhanced learning, Carl’s training sessions are highly interactive, making extensive use of Agile games mixed with scenario-based team problem solving. By adhering to a simple formula of back-to-basics Scrum and Kanban, Carl has mentored numerous smaller teams to become highly productive, surpassing the productivity levels of much larger teams. Carl’s techniques enable teams to deliver quality working software with every Sprint and this has won him some challenging development projects with global companies.With a pragmatic and practical approach to IT best practices, Carl encourages and teaches Continuous Integration techniques to reduce Technical Debt and software integration issues, whilst maximising frequent delivery of quality software with shortened feedback loops. During my time at BP, I have gained immense experience of enabling around 150+ remote, distributed teams (2,000+ people) with live online Lean Agile training (Kanban and Scrum) and hands-on ongoing coaching. Utilising my 11 years of expert knowledge of Azure DevOps (ADO/TFS), I have coached teams to visualise their work from team-level to portfolio-level to facilitate strategic planning. This was the first time M&S had ever launched a new business, using Lean Agile. It was an international Lingerie startup!I engaged with the International Leadership Team (C-Level Directors) and Heads of Department, who became the "Lingerie Everywhere" Scrum Team. Using Lean Startup Framework for accelerated Validated Learning, Increments successfully Delivered in 1-week Sprints, experiments and A/B testing gave early market insights, from which to Inspect and Adapt.Transformed under-performing SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) ARTs to Deliver business goals, using Nexus, in 1-week Sprints. Responsible for implementing Scrum and Kanban project delivery between the IT teams and all levels of the business. Coaching deep collaboration for strong team dynamics and promoting close working relationships between business Product Owners, Development Teams and 3rd party suppliers. Trained and led a Scrum Team to deliver Marine data Exchange, a pioneering renewable energy 1PB Big Data project and subsequently won 2 coveted British Computer Society 2014 UK IT Industry Awards, along with 2 other industry awards. Carl trained the Scrum Team to work in 1-week Sprints with strict governance and quality assurance upon direct advice from Jeff Sutherland, the co-creator of Scrum. Although challenging, this minimised risk, whilst maximising regular iterative output of working software, with shortened feedback loops. Selected by Microsoft for a case study.Responsible for the entire corporate SharePoint infrastructure (SP2010, MOSS 2007, SPS2003), Dynamics CRM, TFS and Azure application development.

Leading digital media agency, owners of key UK real estate brands: FindaProperty.com, Primelocation.com and Globerix.Delivered full architecture review of an unsupportable legacy multi-threaded asynchronous batch processing engine (350,000+ lines of .NET 2.0 code), which powered Findaproperty.com (now Zoopla.com) and Primelocation.com websites and internal accounting systems. Delivered long-term delivery strategy for a highly efficient, supportable replacement system using .NET 3.5 and SQL Server Service Broker asynchronous queued messaging multi-threaded architecture.

As early adopters of Agile techniques, Carl’s Scrum team delivered a multi-agency international digital property network for 40+ international real estate agents. Features included a comprehensive backend property database, with custom XML data feeds, driving 60+ international corporate websites and back office systems. Frequent iterative software delivery afforded short feedback loops and rapid adaption to change.
