Profile bio

About Crisandro Allen Lazo

I am currently an undergraduate biochemistry researcher at the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, University of the Philippines Manila, Philippines (UPM-DPSM), and an intern at the Institute of Molecular Biology, Academia Sinica, Taiwan (AS-IMB).For my undergraduate thesis in UPM-DPSM, I run stochastic simulations of two (2) gene regulatory network motifs to see the effects of bursty gene expression. Using these simulation data, I generate the epigenetic landscape of these networks and analyze their transient behaviors in the presence of time-varying signals using tools from stochastic thermodynamics across the microscopic, mesoscopic, and conditional levels of description.Alongside my undergraduate thesis, I am also working on microscope optical systems as an international intern at the Keita Kamino Lab at AS-IMB. By developing various methods to analyze single-cell dynamics, we seek to gain more insights on adaptive cellular behavior from a biophysics-guided approach. Despite the formal end of my internship under the TIGP-IIP, I continue working with the Kamino Lab by developing machine learning models for analyzing experimental data.Throughout the years, I have also gained valuable skills and experiences in computational and experimental approaches to chemistry and biochemistry. I have undertaken internships at (1) the Electron Microscopy Services Laboratory of UP Los Banos where I learned how to prepare and examine biological samples for scanning electron microscopy, and at (2) the Good ViBEs Laboratory of UP Diliman where I used various software and tools for docking, visualization, and analysis of small molecules and proteins. With these skills in both computational, theoretical, and experimental approaches, I aim to answer questions on cellular dynamics and their implications on higher levels of organization.

Tigp-Iip Student Intern Under The Keita Kamino Lab Of The Institute Of Molecular Biology

Undergraduate Research Apprentice At The Joint Bioinorganic And Biocomputational Sciences Group

Current

Department Of Physical Sciences And Mathematics, University Of The Philippines Manila

The Joint Bioinorganic and Biocomputational (JBB) Sciences group actively engages in research within the fields of computational biology and chemistry, chemoinformatics and bioinformatics, and bioinorganic chemistry. It is presently headed by Dr. Junie Billones and is under the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics of the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of the Philippines Manila. For my undergraduate thesis, I am currently modeling select gene regulatory network motifs subject to stochastic gene expression. Drawing on nonlinear stochastic dynamical systems theory, I probe its dynamics and landscape from simulation data and characterize the behavior of these networks in individual cells and in spatially extended populations. In doing so, I intend to determine the effects of the inherent stochasticity or noise of cellular processes on these networks of gene interaction and how this is translated to patterns of gene expression. Given the nature of this work, I am supervised by Dr. Junie Billones, affiliated with the same department, and by Dr. Paul Gerald Sanchez, presently working in the Institute of Cellular and Organismic Biology of Academia Sinica, Taiwan.Visit the lab's website here! https://dpsm.cas.upm.edu.ph/index.php/joint-bioinorganic-and-biocomputational-sciences-jbbs-group/

Tigp-Iip Student Intern Under The Keita Kamino Lab Of The Institute Of Molecular Biology

Taipei City, Taiwan

The Taiwan International Graduate Program - International Internship Program (TIGP-IIP) is a pre-doctoral research program in Academia Sinica intended for foreign students. For the summer 2024 term, I was selected among hundreds of applicants to work in the Kamino Lab of the Institute of Molecular Biology which seeks to determine the principles that govern adaptive cellular behavior and biological intelligence. For my two-month internship at the Kamino lab, I engaged in their ongoing project on bacterial swimming motility dynamics. I primarily did some (1) programming in Python and MatLab, and (2) wet lab experiments where I prepared and tracked cultures of E. coli. Beyond the formal end of the TIGP-IIP, I am still participating in the lab's projects by building and training machine learning models for data analysis. Given that this work is still in progress, I cannot divulge other information.

Student Intern At The Electron Microscopy Services Laboratory

Emsl, University Of The Philippines Los Banos, Los Banos, Philippines

During my undergraduate internship course, I worked at the Electron Microscopy Services Laboratory (EMSL) of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (UPLB-BIOTECH) at the University of the Philippines Los Banos, supporting the various research activities of the laboratory and of external clients. Currently, the EMSL is the only laboratory in the Philippines that provides services in the preparation of biological samples for scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The main highlight of my time as an intern at the EMSL was the preparation of fungal mycelia for SEM of fungal plant pathogens which we grew along with Bacillus isolates (via dual culture plate assay) to determine the effects of antifungal agents in Bacillus species on the ultrastructure of economically important fungal phytopathogens. Apart from this, my time as an intern practiced my basic microbiological techniques.During my time as an intern, I also assisted in facilitating the two-day seminar and workshop conducted by the EMSL at the University of the Philippines Manila. I was able to gain some insights on teaching hands-on skills to undergraduate students and professionals of various academic backgrounds.Visit the lab's website here! https://biotech.uplb.edu.ph/laboratory-services/electron-microscopy-services-laboratory/

Student Trainee At The Good Vibes Laboratory

Good Vibes Laboratory, University Of The Philippines Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines

The Good ViBEs (Virtual Biochemical Explorations) laboratory is a research group under the College of Science of the University of the Philippines Diliman. The group employs computational approaches to several areas of chemistry and biochemistry. The internship program by the Good ViBEs laboratory primarily focused on the docking of small molecules to proteins. The program heavily emphasized the use of the Windows Subsystem for Linux in carrying out tasks. I ran AutoDock VINA through the WSL command line and visualized the docking poses and interactions on PyMOL using the gWSL user interface. We were also introduced to and were tasked to install other programs used in computational chemistry such as VMD, UCSF Chimera, MGLTools, Open3DQSAR, Open3DAlign, Osiris, LigPlotPlus, and AmberTools.Visit the lab's website here! https://www.facebook.com/goodvibesupd/

Content Contributor For Mathematics

As a Content Contributor, I wrote solutions for textbook problems on high school level general mathematics, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. This job cultivated my skills in writing solutions using TeX and it helped me become more mindful of the pace that I work, especially given that the time I spent working and the quality of my solutions were used to evaluate my work.
