About Carl Lawrence

My passion is in designing and building things. I relish the challenge of creating something new, starting from simple ideas or rigorous requirements. For decades, I’ve enjoyed diverse opportunities in mechanical engineering, physics, advanced transportation technologies, construction and business development. Whether the object is a cargo container for use on bicycles or a large, off-grid aircraft storage hangar, I strive to make it more efficient, more useful, more cost-effective and more appealing. I gravitate toward the more challenging projects. How can the power-plant in a small aircraft be more energy efficient and quieter while being safer? Can a shuttle bus carry 125 people while using less than half the fuel of its contemporaries? How can the fuel economy be doubled on a hybrid-electric car? Throughout my career I’ve enjoyed spending the weeks and months developing the answers to these and many more questions. Bring me your challenging problems in transportation technologies, construction, applied physics, mechanical engineering and relativistic space travel. There are few things I enjoy more than a good brainstorming session.

  • Energysense
    President And Owner
    Energysense 1997 - Present
    Boulder, Co
At EnergySense, we develop strategies and methods to increase your energy efficiency – reducing your expenses and increasing your comfort. We start with fundamental physics, apply years of real-world experience and produce well-thought-out engineering recommendations. We apply our extensive knowledge base to both built structures and mobile vehicles. Our focus is on your ROI – both monetarily and quality of life. EnergySense was founded in 1997, and has produced creative results in alternative fuels and vehicle designs for future mobility and transportation. EnergySense has also developed building designs and amenities with significant reductions in purchased energy requirements. EnergySense is always ahead of the industry – Mr. Lawrence led the EV America team at Unique Mobility to build a battery powered truck in 1994, and produced the Guide to Alternative Fuels Station Design in 1999.Mr. Lawrence was the lead founder of Columbine Bus in 1996, which offered the nation's first fleet of hybrid-electric buses to the Denver Regional Transportation District. These 45 foot Shuttle buses were in service for nearly 20 years, carrying an average of 50,000 daily riders.EnergySense spun-out Eetrex Incorporated to produce plug-in hybrid vehicle conversions and revolutionary Invergers/chargers in 2006. Eetrex was a leading company in power electronics for electric and hybrid vehicles, with over 25 employees.During 2010 and 2011, Mr. Lawrence led the engineering team which converted a Cessna 172 Skyhawk airplane from gasoline to electric power from an on-board battery system. In 2018, EnergySense was engaged to design a passive solar aircraft hangar without any heating system and provide a report to the building department showing that it would never freeze. Our design has since proven itself, never going below 39 F, even when it was -8 F outside overnight.

Swift Tram is developing the world’s most energy efficient, cost effective and sustainable transportation mode. Our version of the hanging train leverages advanced materials, electronics and software to provide a comfortable and invigorating travel experience above the traffic below. The need to elevate transportation is driven by the congestion of buildings, cars and people. Swift utilizes the space above established transit corridors, reducing or eliminating right-of-way issues, and allowing low-cost automated operation. The future of connected mobility depends on fast, clean, safe and reliable regional transit that can be built and operated at substantial savings compared to conventional modes. Planning is currently underway with several public and private entities for installations beginning in 2016.Swift Tram's team currently consists of over a dozen experienced and motivated members who are focused on developing customer and strategic relationships, building a prototype drive bogie and securing equity partners.
