My passion is in designing and building things. I relish the challenge of creating something new, starting from simple ideas or rigorous requirements. For decades, I’ve enjoyed diverse opportunities in mechanical engineering, physics, advanced transportation technologies, construction and business development. Whether the object is a cargo container for use on bicycles or a large, off-grid aircraft storage hangar, I strive to make it more efficient, more useful, more cost-effective and more appealing. I gravitate toward the more challenging projects. How can the power-plant in a small aircraft be more energy efficient and quieter while being safer? Can a shuttle bus carry 125 people while using less than half the fuel of its contemporaries? How can the fuel economy be doubled on a hybrid-electric car? Throughout my career I’ve enjoyed spending the weeks and months developing the answers to these and many more questions. Bring me your challenging problems in transportation technologies, construction, applied physics, mechanical engineering and relativistic space travel. There are few things I enjoy more than a good brainstorming session.

Eetrex was a leading company in power electronics for electric and hybrid vehicles, with over 25 employees.During 2010 and 2011, Mr. Lawrence led the engineering team which converted a Cessna 172 Skyhawk airplane from gasoline to electric power from an on-board battery system.In 2018, EnergySense was engaged to design a passive solar aircraft hangar without any heating system and provide a report to the building department showing that it would never freeze. Our design has since proven itself, never going below 39 F, even when it was -8 F outside overnight.

Swift utilizes the space above established transit corridors, reducing or eliminating right-of-way issues, and allowing low-cost automated operation. The future of connected mobility depends on fast, clean, safe and reliable regional transit that can be built and operated at substantial savings compared to conventional modes. Managing MemberSolar Hangar, Llc Mar 2017 - PresentBoulder, CoSolar Hangar, LLC is the developer of a passive solar, off-grid, aircraft hangar at the Boulder Municipal Airport. The 4,000 square foot hangar has a 45 foot wide by 12.5 foot high aircraft door, a large restroom with shower and a kitchen/break area. The six inch thick concrete walls and floor provide the thermal mass to limit interior temperature changes throughout the days and seasons. The hangar will accommodate four to six aircraft, depending on sizes and wing configurations.

Apr 2006 - May 2010Boulder, CoEetrex Incorporated was founded in 2006, in Carl's garage, to develop the conversions of Toyota Priuses and Ford Escape hybrids into plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and to develop and demonstrate power electronics that interact with batteries for integration in Smart Grids. The current team of engineers are leading innovation in power electronics for on-board high voltage traction batteries and stationary batteries. The company provides custom design chargers, charger/inverters (InvergerTM) for batteries, battery system integration including design of the BMS, system controller, battery module pack, thermal management and system design.Our corporation is dedicated to improving the environment by designing durable, compact, light weight, high efficiency power electronics.Under Carl's leadership the Eetrex team grew the company to over 25 people without any outside funding.

This startup company was the first in the nation to produce a fleet of low-floor, natural gas fueled, hybrid-electric buses. This fleet, now enlarged to 36 buses, carries 50,000 riders a day in downtown Denver. Columbine Bus was acquired by TransTeq in 1997.
