I have retired from industry. I now spend my time working on various open source projects related to the Internet of Things and software defined radio.Prior to my retirement, I spent my career using words and data to predict the future of technology and helping others understand it. I was last the Content Marketing Lead at RStudio PBC, a firm dedicated to open source and enterprise tools for the R computing environment. Prior to this position, I was Director of Education at RStudio, where I focused my efforts on training the next million R users and heading up the workshops program at our annual conference, rstudio::conf. In 2020, our workshop program at rstudio::conf comprised 19 workshops, employed more than 100 teaching staff, and taught more than 1,300 students, making it the largest R training event in the world.Before RStudio, I was a Principal at Think Big Analytics, A Teradata Company. In that role, I trained Think Big clients and employees to create business value using Big Data, open source technologies. During his tenure, Carl developed Think Big Academy's modular curriculum for training new employees and customers on the more than 50 technologies that make up the Hadoop ecosystem, including Hive, Spark, R and SparkR, and Kylo-NiFi. I also created several courses that help employees develop better soft skills around effective communication, presentations, and consulting.Previously, I led analysts at 451 Research and Yankee Group how corporations build, use, and profit from mobility and connectivity. I specialized in quantitative data analysis and visualizations that brought that information to life for our clients and allowed them to act on that data.Prior to joining the 451 Group and Yankee Group, I founded Blackfriars Communications with Joe Butt. There we focused on helping businesses crystalize and communicate their value.Prior to Blackfriars, I was a principal analyst and research director at Forrester Research. While there, I was named one of the 20 most influential analysts in the U.S. in 2002. I've commented on technology trends in media ranging from CNN and the Today Show to the Times of London. I've also spoken at events throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia.Specialties: I specialize in quantitative visualization and qualitative analysis of technology adoption of all types, with emphasis today on software, mobility, and semiconductors.
