About Carly Schwartz

I’m a lifelong storyteller who came of age as a newsroom leader during the online media renaissance. I now use my skills as a journalist to provide editorial consulting services for a wide range of clients in industries I'm passionate about, such as local politics and climate tech. My primary engagement is currently with Alphabet's moonshot division (originally known as Google X). Before venturing out on my own, I served as editor in chief of the San Francisco Examiner and its companion culture magazine, the Nob Hill Gazette. During my tenure, Editor & Publisher magazine named me one of ten “women to watch” in media.Throughout my career, I’ve founded and subsequently overseen several media endeavors, including a feminist magazine, a jungle journalism school, HuffPost’s San Francisco bureau, and a platform I affectionately refer to as Google’s “school newspaper.” I’ve also worked with indigenous communities throughout Mexico on financial inclusion initiatives, and I facilitate storytelling workshops all over the world in both corporate and casual settings. I’m a fierce advocate for people struggling with mental health and substance abuse issues, and I’ve been a spokesperson for Google’s Recover Together campaign and the JED Foundation. I’m trained in narrative therapy by the Evanston Family Therapy Center, and I am using those skills to develop a series of workshops geared toward people in addiction recovery. In addition to the platforms of former employers, my writing has appeared in MSNBC, Elle magazine, Quartz, VICE News, Atlas Obscura, GOOD magazine, San Francisco magazine, the Hartford Courant, Burning Man's Black Rock Beacon, and three decades' worth of moleskine notebooks.

I managed a senior team that oversaw the rest of the editorial staff (30+ individuals), and I worked directly with reporters and editors on story assignments.
