Coordinating the activities in the Mekong Delta of the IUCN NL Strategic Partnerships in the 'Dialogue and Dissent' program of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The partnership 'Shared Resources, Joint Solutions' focuses on safeguarding the ecosystem-based International Public Goods (IPGs) water provisioning, food security, and climate resilience in 16 low- and lower-middle-income countries across 9 regions, of which in Asia: Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines. With local civil society IUCN NL organizes strategic platforms and engages in a critical constructive dialogue with businesses and governments to jointly safeguard vital IPGs in a just and equitable way. The other partnership 'Green Livelihoods Alliance' aims on inclusive sustainable governance of forested landscapes. Its interventions focus on nine low- and lower-middle-income countries, of which in Asia: Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Liaison Manager at the unit Communications & Policy Advice of IUCN NL. Managing the stakeholder network of IUCN NL with a focus on the (currently 39) Dutch member organizations, IUCN - Secretariat and the six IUCN Commissions that unite 10,000 volunteer experts from a range of disciplines. As liaison I coordinate the member meetings in Netherlands, assist in policy influencing and knowledge sharing. I enjoy developing innovative ways to power nature conservation, for example through the Otter Challenge. Linking the scientific world with civil society and businesses in cooperation with the Dutch government at Intergovernmental science-policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Besides that I assist my unit with messaging, news reporting and general communications.

Tracking UN climate negotiations on REDD+ (avoiding deforestation) and sharing this knowledge with civil society organisations and companies to set up initiatives on forest conservation. For example: developing a REDD+ Code of Conduct for energy company Eneco and setting up workshops on carbon financing for African civil society organisations. Also developing a preliminary method to scale the impact and dependencies of energy sources (from coal to solar) on biodiversity and ecosystems. And contributing to an EU study on the impact of European consumption on deforestation worldwide.

Documenting the impact of economic activities on biodiversity and ecosystems. Communicating these findings to Dutch and European policy makers. Furthermore engaging the dialogue with companies on the sustainability of their value chains. I was responsible for acquisition and both technical and financial management of the projects. Worked independently and/or in a team on various issues: land use management (High Conservation Value Areas, ABN AMRO, Shell), extractive industries in Africa (impact mapping), payment for ecosystem services (PES), climate change (impact mapping, Ecosystem-based Adaptation, REDD+), soy production in South America (sustainability criteria), European fisheries (impact mapping), sustainable biomass (Cramer criteria) and the ecological footprint (together with European Environment Agency, Global Footprint Network and WWF).

In 2001 I co-founded Sargasso: a blog that steadily grew into a leading Dutch news and opinion platform. This pioneer initiative on online journalism in The Netherlands first depended entirely on the contribution of over 30 voluntary bloggers. Sargasso had partnerships with Dutch television VPRO's Tegenlicht, ANP (Netherlands national news agency), online foreign journalism Lokaalmondiaal, French news channel France 24 and Dutch newspaper Het Parool and magazine Vrij Nederland.Through my personal commitment to sustainability and interest in environmental issues Sargasso became a well known green blog. It also developed techniques in online journalism that later on were taken over by traditional media.Rising pageviews enabled foundation Sargasso to cover expenses with advertisements. In 2011 the foundation successfully applied for a single grant at the Stimuleringsfonds voor de Pers for a project on data journalism. From that moment three paid freelance editors maintained the blog added with volunteers. During the years I was alternately blogger, editor-in-chief, managing director and chairman.

Modelling geo-ecological evolution, study area: the cuesta landscape in the Luxembourger Gutland region. I developed a 3D simulation model that combined landform evolution with soil formation and interacted with (changing) climate and vegetation cover on a time scale of thousands of years. Research activities consisted of Matlab programming, literature study, writing papers and oral presentations. I also assisted in teaching students at various tutorials and co-organised the yearly geomorphological fieldwork course in Luxembourg. I was contracted by IUCN NL before obtaining a Ph.D. title.

Environmental research and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). I was responsible for the acquisition, the fieldwork and reporting of commercial soil research projects. It also included the making of soil quality maps for Dutch municipalities (Schiedam, Delft) using GIS. Back in 1999 the company was called De Straat Milieu-adviseurs B.V. it changed to MWH-Global.
