This is a role at the forefront of many governmental and law agencies' agendas; to engage and interact with young people, to design and offer them opportunities through creative contact and continued engagement, in order to intervene and break the cycle of crime.I develop workshops explaining policing policies such as stop and search. I have the ability to Initiate contact through on the ground mentoring and home visits, whilst encouraging participation from young people involved in, or likely to become involved in crime. Following a self designed preventative roadmap, I mentor young people at risk of getting involved in crime by organising projects such as football initiatives for boy and girls. or simply organising funding a career choice for a young person. Being aware of, and dealing with unconscious bias is very important to gain the interest and the eventual trust of the young people with whom I interact. Building rapport through communication, the ability to operate at their level of understanding and experience whilst still maintaining a professional level of authority and critical thinking are skills crucial to this role. To achieve the best I regularly communicate with, negotiate and agree project developments with stake holders in the community such as Local Authorities, Police authorities, Jobcentres, voluntary organisations and many others at grass root levels, to get projects funded and land or building resources agreed, to house and run the projects. This involves the writing of fund raising applications and securing and managing budgets for ongoing programs. Writing reports to and coaching senior management as to the strengths and weaknesses of the of the post in action allows appropriate and supportive decisions to be made in regards to the project.Community support and interaction, a creative flair, the ability to organise and run projects and sincere interest in supporting young people are skills constantly at play in this role.
