About Carlos Javier M.

Civil engineer with area of specialization in structural engineering and mechanics. As a structural design engineer, I spent almost 6 years in the industry dealing with a broad range of infrastructure projects. My experience encompassed the analysis and/or design of post-tensioned structures, different bridge types, foundation and support structures for industrial equipment related to the mining and electrical industry, and hydraulic structures. Furthermore, I am familiarized with a wide range of structural design codes and standards such as the ACI 318, ACI 350, AASHTO, Caltrans, USACE, ANSI/AISC 360 & 341, ASCE/SEI 7, API 650 and PIP STE03020. Currently, I am a PhD candidate with my doctoral studies concluded and thesis submitted, just awaiting the defense. My thesis focused on the numerical modelling of the short‐term and long‐term response of unbonded post-tensioned structures with particular orientation towards timber members.

    Development of a finite element modelling approach to simulate the short- and long-term response of unbonded post-tensioned structures at ultimate and serviceability conditions. The proposed approach is able to capture intricate features introduced by the unbonded tendons such strain incompatibility and second-order effects (tendon eccentricity variation). Important features describing the behavior of the hosting members such as material inelasticity, time-dependent effects and large displacements are also well incorporated. Furthermore, a moisture diffusion analysis solved by finite difference techniques is coupled with the finite element analysis framework to include wood's hygroscopic behavior in case of analysing post-tensioned timber structures. The modelling approach proposed features versatility, numerical robustness and computational efficiency to a greater extent making it suitable for carrying out design-oriented parametric studies in the structural engineering practice.

    I participated in the structural assessment of short- and medium-span bridges comprising several bridge typologies under serviceability and ultimate limit states. Typologies such as semi-integral bridges, tied-arch bridges, deck-arch bridges, truss bridges and traditional multi-span bridges were analyzed. I performed the design check of reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete and steel structural components such as girders, pier cap beams, pier columns, decks, abutments, corbels, shear keys, pile and caisson foundations, anchorage zones, as well as bridge bearings. In addition, I was involved in the data acquisition and process of ambient vibration measurements to assess the modal parameters of bridge and mining infrastructure and propose retrofitting solution strategies.

    I was in charge of the design of post-tensioned reinforced concrete girders and decks in bridge infrastructure projects, and the dimensioning of hangers and cables as well. Challenging projects included multi-span continuous bridges with variable depth, tied-arch bridges and integral bridges. I also took part in the design of post-tensioned concrete floors using banded and distributed tendon layouts. Last but not least, I participated in carrying out load tests on medium span bridges to assess their load carrying capacity.
