These systems included namely:- the 33 High Voltage and multi-MegaWatt pulsed power supplies for the RF klystrons, representing a total installed peak power in excess of 200MW, weighing cumulatively around 180 tons, representing a total volume of ~550m3 of sophisticated power electronics;- the 26 RF power stations based on tetrodes for the spokes section of the Linac, representing a total installed RF peak power of 10.4MW, weighing cumulatively around 45 tons and representing a total volume of ~220m3. The development was based on a novel topology that would be conform to and even exceed the ESS baseline requirements. I was then leading a collaboration with LTH, as from May 2013, in order to closely direct this ambitious R&D project, leading ultimately to the design, construction and validation of the klystron modulator reduced scale prototype based on the so-called novel SML (Stacked Multi-Level) topology. During this period I was lecturing different courses in Electrical Engineering and Power Electronics, while leading R&D projects in the fields of power electronics for power quality enhancement applications. The main academic activities included lecturing on power electronic courses to the best students of Montreal and Quebec universities, selected to form the IGEE (Institut de Genie Electrique et Electronique), in Montreal. This institute was owned and funded by the biggest electrical engineering companies present in Quebec like Alstom, HydroQuebec, ABB, etc.).In parallel to these academic activities, I was a consultant for CERN on a study, assisted by detailed simulation models, of a resonant multi-level topology for the klystron modulators of the new SPL (Superconducting Proton Linac) project.I was also a consultant for the newly born European Spallation Source (ESS) project in Sweden with the main objective of evaluating the worldwide market on long pulse klystron modulators and launching a call for tender for the procurement of a first unit, including technical specification, advise on technical offers, follow-up of construction and factory acceptance testing. I was also in charge of the development of high voltage pulsed klystron modulators for the new accelerator project Linac 4 and of the unique switch mode power supplies for the Gamma Transition of the PS accelerator, the last ones yielding to a substantial reduction on particle losses at transition. In parallel to this “on the field” technical work, I was responsible for the management of the whole section in terms of personnel, budget, documentation, interfaces, safety, technical and development strategies. As section leader, I was also in charge of several R&D projects aiming at the design, development, procurement, installation, testing, commissioning and operation of different new types of highly complex power supply systems, most of them unique at CERN and at a worldwide level. In total, more than 100 power supply systems of 7 different types were developed internally under my direct responsibility, produced and installed; all projects being successfully achieved within the allocated budgets, within the schedule timeline and complying with the technical and quality requirements. Later on, I was appointed as lead engineer for the Site Acceptance Test and commissioning of these power supply systems on their real loads, having had the privilege of leading the very first powering up campaign of the large detector magnets for these 3 experiments.I was also lead engineer for the upgrade of the existing (20+ years old) power supply for the ALICE detector solenoid magnet (160V/33kA - 5.3MW), the largest power supply at CERN in terms of rated current. Moreover, I was lead engineer and project manager for the development of a series of high power switch mode power supplies (IGBT based) for the consolidation of some of the existing accelerators within the PS complex, ranging from a few tens of kW to 1 MW (LEIR, PFW, B8 series). In particular, I had the privilege of being in charge of the engineering design and in-house development of the most powerful switch-mode power converters at CERN at the time (B8, 2 power supplies, 4-quadrant, 1MW rated power each).
