Senior Mechanical Engineer
Current• Create, direct, and conduct engineering test procedures to assess product safety and to identify sources or causes of product malfunction or failure. • Develop technical requirements, test methodologies, and specifications for voluntary or mandatory product standards. • Test and evaluate products for potential, substantial and imminent hazards; and determine compliance with the organization's regulations, laws, and product standards.• Analyze in-depth investigations that include consumers, fire and police officials, as well as other knowledgeable officials and witness testimonies on product-related injuries and deaths.• Assess product specifications, manufacturer's testing and quality control procedures, product certification, and labeling. • Review petitions, prepare memoranda, and reports analyzing the product problem, and make technical recommendations for Commission consideration using risk-based decision criteria. Work includes: Proposed rulemaking, notices of proposed rulemaking/standard revisions, and product safety assessments, among others.• Provide technical advice to management and other senior engineers on the design, evaluation, modification, and operation of a myriad of products and materials. • Serve as the Commission’s senior mechanical engineering expert in the development of product performance specifications for the evaluation of safety standards.• Represent the agency in mandatory and voluntary standards and liaison activities with industry associations, standards organizations, and other Government agencies. • Manage risk-reduction research projects for preparation and analysis of safety standards.
