Carlos Varón, P. Eng. Email and Phone Number
With over 16 years of work experience, I am a passionate and skilled clinical engineer who specializes in hardware and system performance. I am currently working at University Health Network, one of Canada's leading research and teaching hospitals, where I manage the operational and maintenance activities of radiopharmaceuticals production equipment. I am motivated by the mission of improving the health and well-being of patients and communities through innovation, collaboration, and excellence. In my current role as a clinical engineer, I have successfully handled the quality assurance, preventive maintenance, inventory management, and design and development of state-of-the-art electronic devices for the cyclotron and radiochemistry equipment. I have also contributed to several studies and experiments to perform quality assurance for volumetric modulated arc therapy on a linear accelerator used for radiation therapy . I have demonstrated my problem-solving, hardware, and system performance skills in these projects. I am always eager to learn new technologies and best practices to enhance the safety and reliability of the medical systems.

Linear Accelerator And Cyclotron EngineerUniversity Health Network Apr 2014 - Nov 2017Toronto, Canada Area• Manage the operational and maintenance activities of General Electric PETtrace 800 cyclotron and radiochemistry equipment under a quality management system to safely meet the production and research demands. • Planning and scheduling Preventive Maintenance for the cyclotron based on manufacturer recommendations and system results.• Inventory management and forecasting of parts and consumables needed for the safe and reliable operation of the radiochemistry area.• Design, development and validation of state of the art electronic devices that comply with best practices of engineering and GMP for safe manipulation and transport of radioactivity from the cyclotron’s targets to the automated radiochemistry synthesis units for radio tracers manufacturing.• Keep record of the systems failures and services to report system reliability and compliance as well as to support service planning and failure forecasting.• Adherence to CNSC regulations and procedures to ensure professional and safe working conditions for others employees and visitors in the area.• Applying Canada Health GMP Regulations regarding engineering activities for clean room environments. -
Physics AssociateUniversity Health Network May 2009 - Apr 2014Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto• Quality Assurance of Radiation Therapy’s linear accelerators relative to radiation delivery specifications and tolerances established by the Radiation Physics department. Conducted absolute dose and relative dose measurements using variety of dosimetry equipment. • Studies and experiments to perform Quality Assurance for Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) on a Linear Accelerator (Linac) using available tools. • Implemented and put into work World Health Organization directives for controlling and keeping medical instrument inventories and their calibration. • Wrote documentation related to new QA procedures for Linacs. • Participation in Acceptance Testing and commissioning (Measuring and collecting data for radiotherapy beam models) of new Linear Accelerators. • Accelerator Technology faculty member. -
Research AssociateUniversity Health Network May 2007 - May 2009Ontario Cancer Institute, Toronto, On•. Imaging Performance evaluation based on spatial resolution, noise and Signal to Noise ratio (Modulation Transfer Function, Noise Power Spectrum and Noise Equivalent Quanta) • Improve Multi Scale, Multi Resolution Image registration algorithm by maximizing the Cross Correlation and Mutual Information between 2 X-Ray, different energies images (Dual Energy).• Collected patient cohort for validation of the method and analysis of outcomes. • Tested and improved a Multi-scale Multi-resolution image registration algorithm with the images acquired from the cohort to reduce computational time by comparing Cross- correlation and Mutual information as metrics, to verify the alignment of images after deformation. • Performed theoretical and experimental studies to optimize the Dual Energy acquisition parameters. (kVp, filtration and dose allocation between the Low and the High energy images). • Studied experimentally some noise reduction techniques based on our theoretically developed techniques. • Developed an experimental visualization tool for Dual Energy Imaging. • Conducted observer-based studies for imaging performance using expert radiologist in diagnostic imaging. • Built a prototype system for the development of Dual Energy applications (a portable DE system). • Conducted phantom studies for the development of a portable Dual Energy System for tube and catheter insertion in an emergency room. This is now a commercially available product. • Developed specifications for an X-ray tube generator for tube and catheter insertion in an emergency room with the minimal power requirements for the generator to achieve both good image quality and portability. • Participated in reporting outcomes in posters and Clinical publications. • Management of project development, meetings and wrote quarterly reports for project evolution and deliverables. -
Technical Support RepresentativeIbm Global Services 2002 - 2005Toronto, Canada AreaProvided world-class technical support to end users on Intel-based X-series servers, desktops, laptops and peripherals. Resolved hardware and OS installation issues. -
Avionics EngineerAvianca Jun 1996 - May 2001Bogota, Colombia• Responsible for technical documentation and aircraft component maintenance manual updates and revisions. • Improved the technical staff productivity by incorporating PC based Automated Test Equipment. • Increased the aircraft components repair capabilities by evaluating and acquiring test equipment and then training technical staff. • Improved the aircraft components repair quality control as defined by national and international aircraft’s polices and regulatory bodies.• Provided technical support, guidance and training to the technical staff in the use of new equipment. • Designed Automatic Test Equipment in collaboration with a third company based on a grant founded by Colciencias (Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation Colombia). • Evaluated and the aircraft’s components needed to be included in the first stage of this project of automation based on such statistical information as failures during the year, repair costs by sending the equipment to an external approved repairing station and turnaround time. • Wrote technical documentation relevant to the automatic test equipment operation, revisions and modifications.
