Carlos Vélez is a water engineer specialized in the development and application of mathematical models for the management of water resources. He has an academic background and 18 years of working experience related to the development and application of modelling tools for water systems. He has a bachelor degree in sanitary engineering from Universidad del Valle (Colombia), a MSc degree in Water Science and Engineering with specialization in Hydroinformatics from Unesco-IHE (Netherlands), a Doctoral degree from TUDelft University (Netherlands) and a Post-Doctoral research at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). Currently he is working as hydrologist at the Waterschap Hollandse Delta.Having specialized in Hydroinformatics, he gained the necessary knowledge and skills to programme mathematical tools for data processing, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, as well as model calibration and validation. He has experience in using different programming languages: MatLab, R, Python, Delphi, Fortran, as well as software like: MIKE Basin, HEC-HMS, SWAT, MIKE 11, HEC-RAS, Sobek, Delft 3D, ICM, WASP, SWMM and STOAT. He has executed the complete modelling process including definition of objectives, model selection, data acquisition, data processing, model development, calibration/validation and application. He also has extensive experience in applying statistical techniques to analyse temporal correlations, spatial correlations and correlation in complex models.In terms of research and development Carlos is interested in decision support systems. During his carrier the integration of data and modelling tools to improve the management of water systems has been a common denominator.
