I am a 25 year veteran with the Chattanooga Fire Department, working my way up through the ranks to my current position of Battalion Chief. Previous to this, I was introduced to Firefighting by the US NAVY, where I served as an aircraft director aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71). MY PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY:The foundation of who I am is owed to my Grandfather and Mother, who instilled in me the values and ethics of a humble and meek man, who navigates life with humility. I was often reminded not to walk around as if the world owed me, but rather as I owed it. With this in mind, I still live with a sense of debt owed to the community that I grew up in, positioning myself as a servant leader now and an example to those around me.As part of my evening routine, I reflect on my day and every encounter made with someone else, self-evaluating and self-accountable in an effort to be a better version of myself to others on the next day. I even taking the chance to correct a missed opportunity from the day before, if needed.Humility, Encouragement, Reasoning, Philanthropy, and Public Service are the 5 “Example Values” out of a possible 16 that best describe my current position as a leader, and the skills that I plan to strive to sharpen moving forward. In an effort to leave “IT” better than I found ‘IT”, I invest in those up and coming leaders in theChattanooga Fire Department, as well as in the communities I serve.● Leadership by Example - When holding my current and future leaders accountable, it isimperative that I hold myself just as (if not more) accountable and responsible as a man and inthe rank and role that I hold. To the best of my ability, I need to be the change that I want tosee. I have worked a lot harder, for a lot less, and in career fields where there were no rewards. After over 29 years of service, I am proud to still get to work in a field that I enjoy. I want toinstill and return a sense of pride in what we do for our communities, and for our city.● Making Mental and Physical Health a priority - Doing my part to help break thestigmas associated with mental health by sharing vulnerable experiences and some personalissues that I have faced in my career with my fellow firefighter. These things are done in aneffort to show firefighters that it is OK to not be OK, but we have to do the work to properlyhandle the issue. In the end, none of us are alone in the issues that we face.We live forever through our investments in those that we mentor, be sure to leave a positive investment.
