Carlos Iván Hernández is a candidate for the degree of Juris Doctor from St. Mary’s University School of Law; his expected graduation date is in May, 2017. He holds a Graduate Certificate in Translation Studies from the University of Texas at San Antonio where he completed both of his Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Spanish. Carlos has been actively involved in different non-governmental organizations that advocate for immigrant rights, particularly within the context of South and Central American asylum seekers detained at south Texas detention centers. Some of these organizations include DORCAS International, the Roger Williams University School of Law Pro-Bono Collaborative, and the Refugee and Immigration Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES). He has conducted an independent study advocating for the inherent necessity of establishing a uniform system for providing court-appointed, certified interpreters in state civil judicial proceedings, and currently his research focuses on language access advocacy in the U.S. judicial system with an emphasis on the legal field of asylum and humanitarian visas
