- Study how PUS1 gene mutations affect mitochondrial tRNA function in the Garcia Lab- Use yeast as a model in identifying mutations in the PUS1 gene ortholog, pus1, and its paralog, pus2- Gain a better understanding of how those mutations contribute to mitochondrial myopathies and disease.

- Assisting physicians during patient examinations- Taking patient medical histories and vital signs- Preparing exam rooms for patient visits- Performing basic laboratory tests, such as drawing blood or collecting urine samples- Preparing and sterilizing medical instruments- Providing patient education on treatment plans and medications- Managing medical records and updating patient information in electronic health records systems- Coordinating referrals to specialists or other healthcare providers- Maintaining a clean and organized clinical environment

- Performing electrocardiograms (ECGs) to record the electrical activity of the heart- Applying electrodes to the patient's chest, arms, and legs according to standardized procedures- Operating EKG machines and ensuring accurate recordings of heart activity- Recognizing and troubleshooting technical issues with equipment or readings

Provide weekly study sessions to students enrolled in Biosciences I course at UTSA. In these sessions, students work together to improve learning strategies by reviewing course material and preparing for tests.
