Carl Sergio, AIA has 13 years of experience across firms from the smallest to the largest, across all phases of design and construction, and through many market sectors and project typologies. He enjoys the collaborative design process with teammates, clients, and contractors, on projects locally and nationwide, and loves realizing a project through Construction Administration. Carl believes in using his time and talent to have an impact on the world, and the people in it. He has been co-director of AIA Chicago’s Bridge Mentorship Program the past eight years, he co-founded AIA Illinois’ Emerging Professionals Network in 2017, and he served as AIA National's Young Architect Regional Director on the AIA Illinois board in 2019 and 2020. He then started AIA Chicago's Wing Student Mentorship Program serving all three local architecture schools, and in 2021 he created the virtual, nationwide NEXUS Mentorship Program, aimed at serving emerging professionals across the United States. He has spoken on mentorship at the AIA National Conference, NOMA National Conference, AIAS Forum, and AIA FL Annual Convention.He has previously volunteered on design-build teams for Rebuilding Together, City Year, and Territory NFP as well as leading Gensler’s CANstruction team for four years and raising $30,000 in food for the Greater Chicago Food Depository. He also values paying it forward through mentorship, having volunteered with Erie Neighborhood House, the Chicago Architecture Center, the ACE Mentorship Program, and NOMA’s Project Pipeline. Carl has lived in Atlanta, Barcelona, Indianapolis, and Chicago in addition to traveling to 49 states, 48 countries, and hundreds of cities. He has dabbled in half a dozen languages and is conversational in Italian and Spanish. He is endlessly curious, and passionate about experiencing and learning from other countries, cities, cultures, languages, and peoples. In his "free time" he can be found carrying around his two young daughters to keep his arms in shape or riding them around on the family cargo bike, and working on their three-flat in Wicker Park.Carl’s past experience includes a Bachelor’s in Art and Psychology from The University of Notre Dame, hands-on construction experience, a certificate in Lutherie (guitar making), and publishing 12 photo-quality pencil illustrations in “Inherit the Land: Jim Crow Meets Miss Maggie’s Will”. He has experience in nearly every art medium in 2D and 3D, including watercolor, oils, pencil, colored pencil, pen, charcoal, pastel, and clay, wood, metal, and plaster sculpture.
