Hospital Placement
As part of the Master of Pharmacy degree, I completed a 5 week hospital placement at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, St John of God Subiaco Hospital, Perth Children's Hospital, King Edward Memorial Hospital and North Metropolitan Mental Health Service. During this placement I worked in teams with other students to present daily clinical cases to hospital staff which focussed on current treatment and improvements that can be made to patient care. This allowed me to develop exceptional problem solving skills to interpret clinical laboratory results, medication management plans and progress notes to identify interventions that could be made to improve patient care. I was also able to develop my oral and written communication skills by performing MMPs and counselling on medications under supervision.
Community Project
As part of the Professionalism in Action unit of the Master of Pharmacy degree, students are encouraged to develop professional skills by working within groups in collaboration with a community partner, to plan and execute a project that addresses the needs of a community. My group partnered with members of the Gastroenterology Unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) to create age appropriate CMIs for adolescents aged 12-18 with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). We chose to do this project because members of our team had first-hand experience of being diagnosed with this condition as an adolescent and struggling to understand their condition and medications. Our community partner further emphasised that patients in this age group often lack the health literacy to understand discussions about their treatment and run the risk of non-adherence due to this lack of understanding and a fear of side effects. To address this need, we created CMIs on the following IBD medications: aminosalicylates, biologics, corticosteroids, methotrexate, tacrolimus and thiopurines. We then distributed them to Paediatric clinics, hospitals and pharmacies across Perth for responses from both patients and health care professionals. While we failed to receive the number of responses we hoped for, the feedback so far has been promising and we believe they are a good first step for engaging this age group in their treatment and improving understanding about their medication. As there were four members in our team and two members of the Gastroenterology Unit we collaborated with, there some problems with differing professional opinions and timeline performance that had to be overcome to complete this project successfully. However, we managed to do this and through this project I was able to develop skills in; effective communication, collaborating with others for the delivery of patient-centred and culturally responsive care, showing leadership of self and managing professional contribution.
Pharmacy Placement
As part of the Master of Pharmacy course, I completed a 5 week rural community placement at Busselton Pharmacy. During my placement, I worked across multiple areas including behind the counter, where I reinforced my prior knowledge from this degree to help with S2/S3 sales, primary care advice, and counselling on certain medications under pharmacist supervision. I also worked in the dispensary where I learnt how to dispense prescription medications using Minfos software. This placement also exposed me to the use of medicinal cannabis in healthcare, and I was able to sit in on consultations with patients and listen to how it has drastically improved their often debilitating medical conditions. This experience really opened my eyes to the potential of this facet of medicine to revolutionize management of pain and chronic medical conditions, and I am interested in being involved in this aspect of pharmacy in the future.
Swimming Instructor
As a Swimming Instructor, I worked at both beaches and swimming pools in multiple locations across Western Australia to provide swimming and survival skills to children, as part of In-term and Vacation Swimming (VacSwim) programs. My duties involved:• Lesson planning and teaching groups of 5-15 children of different swimming capabilities• Communication with staff and supervisors over lesson plans, equipment and swimming areas• Communication with children and parents on the child’s progress and how they can improve• Mentoring junior staff • Assuming the role of Deputy and taking children for one-on-one lessons when required• Planning and implementing the training of the Bronze Medallion course
