About Carly Hui

I recently graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.S. in Chemical Biology and minor in Data Science. As an intern at Sandia National Labs, I worked on enhancing multiple facets of nanomaterials for hydrogen storage, analyzing 3D structures for mass transport, and exploring nanobubble nucleation and growth in radiated metals. I have recently started as a R&D laboratory technologist at Sandia National Labs in the Energy Nanomaterials department supporting similar projects. In addition to research, I am extremely passionate about education and community service. As the former Professional Chair and Academic Chair of Alpha Chi Sigma, the professional chemistry fraternity at UC Berkeley, I helped acquaint undergraduates in the College of Chemistry to numerous academic and professional resources, hosting information sessions with various companies, research labs on campus, and the Career Center. I love having the opportunity to inspire younger generations and expose to them the endless applications of the scientific world.

Carly Hui Work Experience Details
  • Sandia National Laboratories
    Senior R&D Laboratory Technologist
Sandia National Laboratories Sep 2023 - Present
    Livermore, California, United States
  • Sandia National Laboratories
    Energy Nanomaterials R&D Intern
Sandia National Laboratories Jun 2021 - Sep 2023
    Livermore, California, United States
Within the Energy Nanomaterials Department, I work on multiple projects to enhance the versatility of and solve manufacturing inconsistencies inherent in nanomaterials for industrial applications, ranging from H2 storage to exchange chromatography. In a laboratory setting, I refine previous syntheses to upscale the yield of Pd nanoparticles through a seed-mediated growth method. We have been able to synthesize uniform size and shape single-crystal, faceted nanoparticles using revised procedures. In addition, I help utilize multiple software to efficiently analyze 3D datasets of 3H-irradiated Pd alloy samples by employing ML models. This allows for more accurate quantification of bubble count, volumes, and radii. Lastly, I work with principal researchers to streamline digital volume correlation analysis of 3D-printed lattice structures, allowing us to quickly identify defects after comparison to a computer-generated array of flow paths.
  • Alpha Chi Sigma - Sigma Chapter
    Associate
Alpha Chi Sigma - Sigma Chapter Aug 2019 - Present
    Berkeley, California, United States
  • Alpha Chi Sigma - Sigma Chapter
    Academic Chair
Alpha Chi Sigma - Sigma Chapter Jan 2022 - May 2022
    Berkeley, California, United States
As the Academic Chair of UC Berkeley's premier Professional Chemistry Fraternity, I supported Alpha Chi Sigma's renowned academic standing by organizing 10+ CoC-oriented review sessions and updating and rebuilding the fraternity's test bank and CoC course catalog. To enhance Alpha Chi Sigma's extensive research network, I facilitated 4+ research events to acquaint our members with fraternity and CoC alumni, CoC professors, CoC faculty, and expand our network to encompass research opportunities outside UC Berkeley.
  • Berkeley Lab
    Undergraduate Research Affiliate
    Berkeley Lab May 2020 - May 2022
    Berkeley, California, United States
Under our research team's PET project, I investigate the potential of a PET-active 134Ce/134La in vivo generator system to be used as a theragnostic matched pair with 225Ac and 227Th. Quantitative estimations of in vivo stabilities and biodistributions of various 134Ce-complexes projected from 3D microPET images are analyzed utilizing image processing software (AMIDE, ImageJ, Fiji) and Python. This will culminate into 1 publication evaluating trastuzumab-DOTA-134Ce’s diagnostic potential for HER2+ breast cancer. Currently, I am writing a scientific review evaluating 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) and other siderophore derivatives as biomimetic f-element decorporation agents.
  • University Of California, Berkeley
Undergraduate Student Researcher: Alivisatos Research Program (Agurp)
University Of California, Berkeley Jan 2020 - May 2020
    Berkeley, California, United States
Collaborating with 4 graduate students in the A. Paul Alivisatos Group, I investigated and monitored 3D organic-inorganic interfaces of Cs-infused nanocrystals. With 2 other individuals, I programmed 2 applications utilizing Python to accurately quantify the effects of increasing oleylamine and oleic acid surfactant concentrations on the emission efficiency of CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystal structures. This semester-long project culminated into a virtual poster session presented to 60+ College of Chemistry faculty; I highlighted the calculated critical ratios for optimal crystalline morphology and optoelectronic behavior.
  • Alpha Chi Sigma - Sigma Chapter
    Professional Chair
Alpha Chi Sigma - Sigma Chapter Jan 2020 - May 2020
    Berkeley, California, United States
As the Professional Chair of UC Berkeley's premier Professional Chemistry Fraternity, I oversee and promote the professional advancement and career growth of our brothers and undergraduates in the College of Chemistry. I have orchestrated 3 information sessions featuring 6+ industrial companies, 1 AXS x AIChE alumni panel, and 4 interactive workshops with 15+ AXS alumni and Career Center faculty to provide undergraduates with resume peer-review services, interview preparation, and LinkedIn and Handshake tutorials.
