Since qualifying from the University of Dundee in 1990 with an M.Phil in Public Art and Design I have exhibited extensively in England, Ireland and on the Continent. From 1988 to 1991 I was a visiting lecturer at Limerick School of Art & Design. I have been awarded numerous residences including Crammond Sculptor (1989), Sculpture Fellow in Limerick School of Art (1990), West Cork Sculpture Residency (1991), Artist in Residence for the Midlands (1992).Although my artistic qualifications are in sculpture, I have always had a passion for painting which came to fruition in 2001 when I lived in The Algarve in Portugal. My paintings work in the border zone between landscape painting and true abstraction, landscape art in its most attenuated form, where it approaches an abstraction it can never fully attain. My current series, based on traditional Co Clare tunes (as many Irish tunes use the landscape as the inspiration point) not so much depicts a particular scene as distills its essence. My work can be viewed on my web site at http://carmeldoherty.com
