More than 13,000 people die every year in the United States from a condition called aortic dissection. 40% die immediately, and the risk of dying from it can be 1% - 3% per hour until the patient is treated. Proper diagnosis, and timely treatment are critical in the patient surviving. In May 2015, 22 hours after the delivery of my second daughter, I suffered from an aortic dissection that nearly took my life. Prior to this, I had a very active lifestyle and meaningful careers. I am a United States Navy Veteran, serving 4.5 years as a Dental Technician in multiple roles of chairside, radiology, front desk lead, Records Coordinator, and Supply & Logistics Coordinator. When I separated and while working toward my degree, I continued dental surgical assistanting. After 9 year of the dental world, I obtained my degree in International Business, and began working for XTO Energy (a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil). I began as a technical assistant, doing administrative duties, special projects, and property and accounting information analysis in the Reserves Department. I was then offered a position in the Mergers/Acquisitions departments preparing evaluations for acquisition, trade, or divestment of properties. In early 2017, I decided to focus all my energy to my family, and the condition that changed my life. I felt I had a purpose to be a voice, be of support to others on the same journey, and do work alongside others aiming to make change, educate, promote research, support the affected, and fundraise for all such projects. Since, I have voluntarily done all of that. In the years following, I have met incredible patients, and been introduced to many surgeons and researchers who came to know of my desire to drive change and be of support to affected patients and their families. I have been an ambassador and part of much collaborative work with multiple nonprofits for Aortic Disease. In 2017, I also founded an event called Run for Aortic Health. This 5K/10K walk/run event raises public awareness of this condition, and raises vital funds for research and related studies/initiatives. It supports what is important to the aortic community, funding research and projects that will provide support, resources, and improve the quality of life for so many affected patients. Working such projects that I am passionate about has been fulfilling, and I hope to continue being a part of it.
