I am a “Jack” and “Master” of many trades, all tied to my experience as a print and broadcast journalist. The writing foundation has led to professional awards and a career-crowning achievement—writer for the 1993 PBS documentary “Goin’ Back to T-Town”—rebroadcast to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1921 Tulsa race massacre. That work threaded the needle for the recently published memoir about the career of my father, big-band leader, Ernie Fields.A few career highlights: • Part of the Boston Globe team awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for coverage of Boston school desegregation. As a broadcaster, I was nominated for six regional “Emmy” awards, winning twice. • As press secretary for Boston’s district attorney Ralph C. Martin, successfully placed in-depth profiles in Boston Magazine, Boston Globe Sunday Magazine (cover story), and an NBC Nightly News story. • KeySpan/National Grid roles included overseeing strategic customer relations programs that engaged all stakeholders at municipal, state, and federal levels relating to energy development, construction projects, and sustainability.Awarded the Nieman Fellowship for Journalists at Harvard University, an honorary doctor of Humane Letters from Salem State University. Also recognized as one of the “Legends of Roxbury: A Celebration of Black Women in Broadcast Media” by Roxbury Community College Foundation and one of “Boston’s 100 Most Influential People” by GetKonnected Inc. and shortly will be acknowledged for the “Carmen Fields Collection” of books by black authors that I am donating to Salem State University. My volunteer work includes leadership on the boards of the Museum of African American History (Boston and Nantucket); National Association of Black Journalists, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (Boston Alumnae chapter); Max Warburg Courage Curriculum, Massachusetts Marketing Partnership, among many others.I’ve been described as confident, creative, and courageous.
