About Carol A. Compton
My first stop was San Francisco and jobs at KKHI-95.7 FM (classical radio) and KQED-9 public television. Then a string of freelance projects like a syndicated radio show co-producer and researching movie production facts for on-air talent at a start-up Oakland cable station, otherwise called side-hustles. I had no idea that my movie, reading, writing, and research obsessions would result in the mash-up profession of script clearance. It’s a mix of reading, story analysis, fact-checking, historical and intellectual property research, risk analysis, and report writing. Perfect for my Gemini brain. My first job in Los Angeles was as a game show researcher. The research geek in me was unleashed. Soon I fell into a film school crowd and was introduced to DIY no-budget filmmaking. After a few years of script clearance research, I realized that the new wave of filmmakers needed help with the business side of production. IndieClear was created for independent movie productions exclusively. It was a niche within a niche, which was risky for a startup business.Luckily the timing was right. One of my first projects was Lee Daniels’ The Woodsman, then all of his films up to Precious, which propelled him into the studio system. I worked on Steven Soderbergh’s Bubble, Che, and The Girlfriend Experience. Other indie films followed like Beasts of the Southern Wild, Magic Mike, Chi-Raq, Dallas Buyers Club, You Were Never Really Here, Split, The Farewell, and Shirley. My inner movie addict loves stories, and supporting the people who make them. I finally found IT.

He told me how he got the idea to write the Oscar-winning song “High Hopes” from watching a trail of ants march into his studio bungalow.I enjoy collecting vinyl soundtracks especially jazz scores by Quincy Jones, Oscar Peterson, Michel LeGrand, Lalo Schifrin, Dave Grusin, Duke Ellington and Johnny Mandel. I met Jerry Goldsmith in 1993 at Radford Studios in Los Angeles where he signed my Chinatown album. Lalo Schifrin signed my Cool Hand Luke vinyl at Catalina Bar & Grill on Cahuenga after his performance with his trio. He was lovely. In 2019 I met Ludwig Göransson at KCRW’s Tiny Desk event where we talked about jazz scores, and he signed my Black Panther vinyl. I guess old habits die hard, or not at all. Show less
