Lead efforts to diversify income and accelerate innovation within UNC Health and the UNC School of Medicine by building businesses of tomorrow and supporting internal innovators, aligned with the long-term aspirations of UNC Health

Established and currently lead the UNC Health Care and School of Medicine Center for Health Innovation with a mission to drive disruptive transformation of healthcare financing and delivery systems (www.med.unc.edu/innovation). Develop and manage diversified portfolio of innovation initiatives in collaboration with UNC faculty and employees, industry partners, and other external funders. Develop strategic and operational plans for UNC Health Care and School of Medicine to transition to patient-centered, value-oriented healthcare models. Facilitate large-scale, multi-disciplinary project teams in program design, collaboration, project execution, and external funding efforts.

Evaluated, designed and implemented pharmacy benefits and expense management programs for a pharmacy budget of over $400M per year. Created member-targeted direct mail programs increasing the use of over-the-counter and generic drugs resulting in savings of $12 million per year. Renegotiated pharmacy vendor agreement saving $18 million. Developed and produced member, pharmacy and physician education materials. Represented BCBSNC in large customer sales meetings.

Managed staff of ten and $50 million annual medical expense budget. Reduced annual medical expense by $8.5 million through contract negotiations. Created member access to hundreds of accredited providers through six new networks including Skilled Nursing Facilities, Home Health and Infusion Agencies, Durable Medical Equipment Providers, Hospices and Dialysis Facilities. Managed behavioral health network.

Coordinated long-term strategy development with senior leadership. Identified opportunities for increased growth, improved operational efficiency, expanded healthcare management programs and enhanced financial performance.

Developed strategies for Fortune 500 clients including growth strategies, profitability improvement, new product development, market expansion and exit, customer segmentation, organizational structure redesign and evaluation of business portfolios. Performed best-practice benchmarking, financial modeling and forecasting, cost modeling, competitor analysis, customer segmentation analysis and process and organizational redesign. Managed projects in the technology, telecommunications, manufacturing, retail, and healthcare industries.
