Carol used to own -The Pink Mermaid which is a Mastectomy Boutique located in Groton, CT. She is a BOC Certified Mastectomy Fitter and a BOC Certified Orthotic Fitter. She offers fitting services to women who have gone through breast cancer surgery. She also fits men and women with lymphedema garments or compression stockings.These items are typically covered by insurance companies. We now participate with Medicare, Tricare, Connecticare, CTCare VIP Medicare, MultipPlan (which includes most United Healthcare, Cigna, Aetna, and about 650 other plans!). BC/BS and Medicaid applications are currently being processed. Customers can be fit for anything they need - such as post mastectomy camisoles for immediate use after the surgery. These tops have a "puff" to help achieve symmetry when leaving the hospital and special removable pockets to hold the drains that are still in place. During recovery they can be fit with compression bras if needed. After healing (usually 6 weeks) they can be fit with regular mastectomy bras and various types of breast prosthesis forms. If the woman has had a lumpectomy and her chest wall is not even they can be fit with special "shaper forms". Any unevenness can usually be taken care of with the right products and garments.The Pink Mermaid also stocks several lines of headcovers - everything from stretchy scarf styles with "bling" to more classic style hats with brims. For warmth there are stretchy covers to wear to bed and even special insulated hats to wear while swimming!Carol can also fit customers who are dealing with lymphedema with the special garments they may need. Some people are born with primary lymphedema. Anyone who has had lymph glands removed during cancer surgeries or had radiation treatments may find they have lymphedema. They typically receive treatment from a Physical Therapist and then start wearing a variety of garments.
