About me? How to summarise a lifetime of advocacy, activism, research, writing, performing and becoming an opinionated woman of mature years and naturally grey hair.I could simply role put my somewhat impressive list of academic qualifications (which are readily found elsewhere), but this could merely indicate I had spent my adult life as a ‘professional’ student, as the saying goes.Amongst these of course I have been in the full-time paid workforce in what is now politely, and misrepresented by the term, the gig economy. What it has been is a massive period of acquiring Creative Industries knowledge, transferable research skills, public speaking, writing, lecturing, teaching, and yes negotiating between workers and employees.Above all I am most proud of ‘outing myself’ as a public advocate for mental health activism, and successful survivor of challenging life situations, both personally and professionally. I consider one of my most valuable assets is honest reflection about my own flaws, weaknesses and human frailty alongside the ability to use these lived experiences to assist and support others facing similar challenges. After an abortive dabble with political candidacy as an Independent I have realised that some of the most influential people achieving social change work from ‘outside’ the political sphere. I intend to seek such a public contribution throughout my ‘third age’ since I appear to be of an undesirable age for an employee in the private sector. The next decade will see me developing a portfolio of articles, opinion pieces and live speaking engagements sharing decades of academic study conceptualised into useful ‘take-away’ chunks of relevance to my potential audiences. Is there a word which sums up my new career? I do like the work recconteur. I don’t think I can claim the mantel of public intellectual quite yet.Watch this space.

When not working as a performer I have been a proud member of the MEAA, the Media and Entertainment Arts Alliance. As a volunteer with the VABT I askif you are a supporter of the Arts and Creative Industries to consider donating to this Charity. It is Tax deductable and by doing so olnline or in person at Arts venues you are assisting us with supporting our fellow creative workers and their families. The Link to the VABT for donations: https://vabt.com.auMany supporters of the performing arts think often only of the marquee big name performers but the annual income generated by a performing artist is under $22,000. With the work being often casual, fixed term contract and highly unpredicatble with periods of reasonable remuneration interspersed with periods without a regular income at all, our Trust is the main form of safety net for cast and crews in the Performing Arts Industries. (There are currently moves to consolidate a Trust Fund for the Creative Arts practitioners as well as others sectors welfare bodies, Musician's Australia's initiative, Support Act, and the Australian Society of Authors Benevolent Trust. We are all reliant on the hard work of the volunteers of these organisations at times of crisis such as the recent Australian Bushfire Emergencies across the Country where members of our community also suffered the loss of homes and income producing equipment.By donating to the VABT you are able to claim it as a Tax Deductible contribution to a registered Charitable Organisation. This is probably the most important work I do in my professional and private life hence it leading my Linked In profile data. The title is Mad, Bad or Rad; Achieving in the Academy with Bipolar Affective Disorder, Self as author and data. After having completed a personal immersion research project investigating the use of Stand Up Comedy to empower people with Mental Illness, and the effectiveness of using Performing Arts as a means of attacking societal stigma, I am now completing my novel in the same area of mental health awareness and advocacy. My goals for 2014 is the ensure adequate public awareness of the existence of mental health stigma within the Community and in our workplaces. With 1 in 4 Australians suffering from a form of mental illness and more living with or working alongside such a person (family member, friend or colleague) it is my intention to be a public advocate available as an event speaker, public speaker on my own lived experience with mental illness and disenfranchisement from and within the labour market. My work also involves stimulating discussion through my Stand Up Comedy performances and focused Q & A sessions. As part of my research into mental illness and creative arts practice, in 2013 I participated in a workshop directed by David Granirer , Vancouver author (and activist ), Founder of Stand Up For Mental Health. David will be working with people identifying themselves as having mental illness and being willing to find the humour of living with mental illness in daily lives. David's work is very similar to Victoria Maxwell. We are committed to de-stigmatise mental illness by using performing arts as an education and advocacy platform. David's work can be viewed http://www.sbs.com.au/dateline/story/watch/id/601583/n/Comedy-Crusader,and his writing in this area can be found at http://www.thehappyneurotic.com. The resulting performances will be at the BMW Edge venue, Melbourne Australia, in October 2013. Show less
