About Carol Burden

What gets me out of bed in the morning, you mean? The knowledge and experience that we have powerful ways to connect, regardless of our language, regardless of the expectations we brought into the room, regardless of what we think we already know. And that I can lead effectively when I have not only vision but also awareness of the human riches in my circle. (This is all supposed to be fun, after all.)And speaking of our circle. Life is more interesting, and we’re stronger, when we are different. It’s a joy to hear the full range of diverse voices, and to witness our collective strength and frankly our greater collective beauty, when the leading voice isn’t the one you had expected to hear. In my experience, this tends to prompt two questions: who’s not here? And how can the work artists are doing better uplift the experience of their families and our community? So what strengths have I developed? The ability to lead the construction of a budget that reflects my organization’s values, and then to exercise the daily commitment to those values that translates onto paper as good budgetary management. As an unrepentant extrovert I love to make friends on behalf of my organization, and to earn the continued trust of those friends. I grew Capital Harmony Works' donor base by 130%, and the budget from $215K to $1.2M over 7 years, by recognizing the value of our mission to the community, leading our team in leaning into our strengths, and building both earned and contributed income streams. My move to NYC has presented a significant moment for me. I’m thrilled to have found a new professional home base with New York Junior Tennis & Learning, where my leadership, accountability, story-telling, team-building, instinctive and analytical skills can serve the great work of a great organization.

Oversaw the pivot from a traditional community music school to an intensive orchestra program with social impact objectives, and the corresponding rebrand in 2017. Supported the growth from an annual budget of $215,000 to $1,100,000, with an increase in reserves each year. Grew the staff from a single reporting Program Director and 10 teaching artists to a staff of 32, with a racial and ethnic profile that better reflects the youth in Capital Harmony Works’ programs. Introduced health and retirement benefits, to promote equity and staff retention. Established a major gifts program for the organization that in its first year raised $225,000 and has grown incrementally each year since. Led through the COVID-19 lockdowns, spearheading the adaptation of programming, communications, financial management, fundraising, adoption of new technology, staff care, and Board governance activities. Developed key partnerships in the education, arts, government and philanthropic sectors. Stewarded institutional giving, quadrupling corporate, foundation and government support over 7 years. Established new evaluation procedures, measuring the impact of Trenton Music Makers’ music and social development programs for urban children, which are now being used to evaluation programs for both this program and Trenton Children’s Chorus. Led a successful merger in 2021 between Trenton Children’s Chorus, a long-standing community pillar of arts and academics, and Trenton Music Makers, a highly visible El Sistema-inspired youth orchestra, with an award-winning preschool program operated in partnership with the public school district.
