I was one of 4 Flood Advisors covering the whole of Scotland, as part of this role I engaged with the public, businesses, and partners to improve the understanding of flood risk, with the aim of improving their preparedness and response to flooding in Scotland. I provided in-depth scientific advice regarding the flooding and managed their Flood Warning process for disseminating warnings to the public. I engaged with stakeholders to continually upgrade the flood warning service both internally and externally. I reported on the situation, activities and impacts during flooding events, acting as a conduit for information for the emergency services and major stakeholders.

Senior Planning OfficerI was accountable for integrated responses to EIA, SEA and other consultations ensuring that they reflected SEPA’s environmental objectives. I provided advice to strategic and local planners of SEPA policy and environmental objectives and encouraged proactive approaches to environmental protection and improvement. I developed strategic policy in relation to planning.Waste Strategy Coordinator (Part-time)I facilitated the operation of the Waste Strategy Area Groups, developed and implemented Area Waste Plans, communicated with stakeholders such as councils and charities, provided technical support on waste issues, and worked to ensure national objectives were consistently delivered. I worked towards these goals by leading in education and in industry by supporting firms in the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste, and leading on Site Waste Management Plans. I also undertook waste auditing to support the Landfill Allowance Scheme. I briefed other departments, worked closely with other staff on integrated and related matters, supporting the work of the National Waste Strategy Unit. Environment Protection Officer

I scrutinised and assessed applications to for a variety of environmental authorisations but specialised in waste and air legislation (PPC Part B). I prepared licences/permits amendments/variations to existing consents. I inspected sites/locations to assess the level of compliance with statutory requirements and permit/licence conditions; where necessary I took action to improve the operator’s performance and quality of the environment. I dealt with enquires from operators, members of the public and other agencies in relation to pollution control activities or other matters pertaining to SEPA. I also participated in ad hoc task groups and in joint operations with external stakeholders such as Operation Mermaid. I was also an ‘out of hours’ on-call officer and undertook pollution control work as required.
