The Stark County Hunger Task Force was established in 1981 by a group of concerned residents who recognized there were individuals and families who needed food assistance to get them through the month. I served on the Board of Directors until the decision was made to hire a part-time paid program director.In this position, I developed relationships with businesses, schools and churches, resulting in food drives and fundraising campaigns.Community Harvest was created through the combined and diligent efforts of the members of the Stark County Hunger Task Force, the Tri-County Restaurant Association and other concerned members of the community. Its aim was to increase the involvement of the restaurant and food service industry by collecting excess prepared and perishable food and donating it to community groups serving the homeless and hungry.Its inception began in October 1989, after the Ohio Code was revised to protect food donors from liability. I served as one of the founding board members.The Hunger Task Force and Community Harvest shared office support but were guided by two separate Board of Directors. As such, I collaborated with the Tri-County Restaurant Association staff and Board members to organize and host the inaugural "Celebrity Cuisine" fundraiser. Proceeds allowed the organization to purchase its first refrigerated truck. This successful fundraising event still exists today and proves to be a major source of revenue for the organization.
