CAROLINA ORTEGA is a Venezuelan director, dramaturg and performer. She studied Theatre direction and dramaturgy 'MA Text & Performance' at RADA (London) and Literature and Creative Writing (Drama) at University of London. She trained in Physical Theatre at LISPA and City Lit, as well as with John Mowat Lee Delong, Lorna Marshall and Philippe Gaulier. She trained in experimental performance at SMASH (Berlin) and studied Documentary and Biographic Theatre Direction and Dramaturgy at Universität der Künste Berlin. DIRECTING: credits include 'NOMAD' (2022 Oyoun Berlin and 2023 Summerhall Fringe in Edinburgh), 'No Way Out' (Camden People's Theatre London, Ballhaus Ost Berlin 2018, Alytus Teatras, 2019), 'I Gave Him an Orchid' (Jury Price 100Grad Berlin 2014, Edinburgh Fringe 2015), 'What The Circus'(Roundhouse London and Garage Norwich 2017). Created and performed 'Freedom Hurts' with Mat Fafinski and the Mango Society (Sophiensaele 100Grad Berlin 2015). Other directing credits include Ancestry (2022), Solo For One (2021, various performers and locations), John Hinton (directing Ensonglopedia of British History) in 2019; 'What Silence Has To Say' by Blauhauch (2018) and '(R)Evolving Path' with Alex Carrillo (2018). CURATING: She worked as programmer of CASA Latin American Theatre Festival between 2009-12 and Creative Producer at the Bush Theatre in 2012 (London). LIVE ART: She developed '1989' a live archive about the Venezuelan crisis with Performance Artist and documentary theatre maker Lalo Gomes and their duo 'Gegen Butterflies'. As a Performance Art practitioner and outside eye, she collaborated with Laura Jones (AKA Babypunk) for Sophienseale and NgBK Berlin, and Ethan Folk & Ty Wardwell (USA/ DE) for ETB/IPAC Berlin (2018). DRAMATURGY: As a dramaturg, she's worked with Nassim Soleimanpour (IR/DE) ('Nassim'/ Bush Theatre & Ed Fringe Festival 2017 & Nassim Soleimanpour/ Jesper Pedersen (DK) 'Cook' CPH Festival 2017. She has worked as a dance dramaturg with Alex Carrillo at Dock 11 Berlin and with Enrico D. Wey (USA/TW) at UdK and Dansepace NYC (USA). Associate ProducerBush Theatre Jan 2012 - Oct 2012This was a creative producer role for the site-specific and International Associate Producer. I was appointed to this post by the new artistic director, Madani Younis, in order to research and create an agenda of international and site-specific work. During my time at the Bush, I developed a European project that will take place in 2013 in collaboration with a venue in Bilbao and one in Berlin. My role involved creating and developing relationships with venues as well as institutions (such as the Cervantes Institute and the Goethe Institute), as well as identifying correct EU funding for the projects. Additionally, I have worked in support of in-house productions creating and managing budgets for shows, taking part in negotiations and contracts for visiting companies and co-productions, creating a programming strategy and calendar, as well as researching new funding sources for the international and site-specific agenda in collaboration with the Development department. www.bushtheatre.co.uk
