About Caroline Cave, Mba

Devoting more than 30 years of my life to keeping people safe, I am passionate about a vocation that provides me with purpose, personal meaning, and others with safer environments to work. Equally, with well-honed business acumen I have developed through experience an understanding of how HSS creates value for business, as well as mitigating risk. I deliver global programs that not only drive better results, but link to the increasingly important ESG agenda.Working for global organisations with operations in every continent of the world apart from Antarctica, I have enjoyed a variety of roles with BHP, Glencore, Newmont, Hecla, and Rio Tinto. Along the way I have developed and implemented complex and comprehensive health, safety, and security regimes, ensuring accurate and timely reporting that saves time, improves outcomes, and creates efficiencies. Ultimately, investing in people is everything. I believe in building relationships across functions and all levels. With the ability to connect strategy with execution, I have secured top down and bottom up buy-in and influence positive culture change. Adjusting to different working cultures globally, I have engaged with the right people to build support and effect change - on the ground, underground and in the boardroom. I am proud to have been among a minority of women in heavy industry in Australia in the 1990s, and importantly, paving the way for others. I am a dedicated mentor to those pursuing careers in trade, mining and HSS.

Health And Safety Lead - Aurukun Bauxite Project

Baar, Zg, Ch

With previous experience with bauxite and developing related HSS systems, I was asked to help to operationalise the greenfield aluminium project through HSS systems development, and in turn meet legislative requirements. I have designed the operational framework, including systems, documents, and tender processes, to align with overarching ways of working at Glencore and continue to support the development of tailored systems with a view to both drive improvement and protect employee safety.Other achievements include using innovative sampling methodology to ensure no respirable crystalline silica in the ore, thus eliminating the need for costly mitigation measures, and implementing an integrated management system to enable continuous management of documents and records.

Group Manager Sustainability (Coal Department)

Baar, Zg, Ch

Appointed to implement updated systems for management of all health, safety, environment, and communities (HSEC) data for its coal assets in Australia, South Africa, and Colombia, I replaced a manual input system that relied on spreadsheets with an automated solution. Coordinating with HSEC heads in all three countries, as well as the Switzerland leadership team, I played a key role in the creation of programs to reduce workplace incidents, including the development of a database of high-potential risks and fatalities for trending and analysis purposes. Other notable initiatives include the introduction of a PowerBI-based process that led to a reduction of 3 person-days per month while improving accuracy and timeliness of reporting.During this period, I also served as an active member of the COVID-19 response team, leading the development of risk assessments and procedures for the active management of a COVIDSafe workplace.

I supported VP HSS in building the global audit function, including the development of strategy and approach to continuous improvement within the HSS function. A role also supporting a wider goal of diversifying the business from gold into the copper market, I built strong relationships with functional directors and HQ leadership, while communicating across all regions and disciplines to encourage integrated and value-added approaches to HSS. In addition, I reported audit results to the VP HSS and Newmont executive leadership team, regularly reported occupational health reports to management and maintained the Health and Safety intranet portal. My work led to a positive culture change with a focus on continuous improvement around HSS. Key initiatives included the development of a new Integrated Management System (IMS) that ensured full compliance with ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 across sites and a bespoke risk assessment process and training for security staff on Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR). I also served as a member of the investigation team for significant theft and ethics violations.
